Now to translate. To seize valuable things for the sake of waste, and to obtain by improper means or without permission, even to obtain offerings, according to worldly terms, it only constitutes a minor offense. Because "for oneself" has already been said, therefore for others it is a minor offense. Similarly, for the sake of waste as well, whether the thing does not belong to him, or whether it does not belong to oneself, the thought is waste. Here also it is because it is not for one's own sake. Similarly, if one uses improper means such as valuable ropes and nets, it is also a minor offense. Mentioning offerings that are not allowed is to explain that "according to worldly terms" is the reason. If one uses other people's clothes as if receiving alms, or forces donations with medicine and mantras, or chooses (a means) to take back suffering, or takes and distributes for others, it also constitutes a minor offense. If one uses it like obtaining other people's clothes without effort, it is a minor offense, because one has already enjoyed the essence of enjoyment, which is like stealing. If one enjoys without permission, know that this is a very serious offense. If one forces donations by means of mantras and medicine, it is also a minor offense. In order to please others, because of the flowers and other things that are given, one obtains benefits, if an evil thought arises, it will cause the offense belonging to wrong livelihood, but it does not belong to stealing. If one chooses (a means) with the thought of "stealing whatever one wants", it will only constitute a minor offense. For the sake of the Sangha's feast, taking things from the benefactor, and then distributing them by the people, this is only a minor offense. Here the scripture comes from the Vinaya Matters, which says: "The patient, in order to offer the Sangha's feast, gives the things to be distributed into the hands of the attendants, and then they distribute them, this is a major offense", all the way to the end. Here it is said to be a major offense because the benefactor did not know that the Sangha had property, but it is not a defeat. Stealing from the property of the Sangha of the noble ones of the four directions, for the benefit of the Sangha of the four directions, will lead to downfall. Stealing clothes and other things from the cemetery and the manager is also the same. Which monks...

Those four directions are the four directions. The collection of them is the fourth direction. If one steals the property of the Sangha of the four directions solely for the sake of the four directions, then it is a downfall, it is a minor offense. This is the concluding word. Here, the text comes from the Vinaya, which says: A resident bhikshu, with the intention of stealing, moves the utensils of the Sangha of the four directions from one place to another, and then feels remorse. The Blessed One taught: There is no defeat, but it becomes an offense. If the text says "gross offense," then at that time it is said to be a "minor offense," which is to explain the meaning of "downfall." If one hides things belonging to different categories, etc., belonging to different owners, in different places, and those things are also known by those owners, if at that time the value is sufficient, then it is a defeat, because the Sangha is like brothers. If it is not known, then it is a gross offense, because it is for the benefit of others. Similarly, stealing from a completely occupied cemetery, etc., is only a minor offense. Mentioning the cemetery is because it is a low place here. In order to show that the attachment is small, the stealing is not completed. Now we will explain the classification of stealing. Land, if it is taken away after a dispute. When a layman gives up that combination, if again it is the victor, then it is stealing. Now we will explain in detail the classification of stealing. If it is taken away after a dispute, if that dispute is a bet, then when the gambling partner gives up the combination, at that time it should be understood as stealing, and it should be known that that time is the final result. This is the concluding word. If that dispute is made again, then that time is when one becomes the victor, and it should be known that it is stealing. The text here is: Bhikshus, the owner of those who make verbal agreements is the king. If one steals by relying on a complete encirclement, when one reaches the gate of the boundary, that is stealing. If one steals by relying on a complete encirclement, when one reaches the gate and the door of the boundary, that is stealing.
