At that time, (Nanda) and others donated those implements for placing things, and they thought: Why do we need these three kinds of burdens and sesame? It would be better to donate these three kinds of burdens and sesame and then divide these gold coins. Later, they regretted this. The World Honored One taught: There is no defeat offense, but a gross offense will be committed. Here, because those who received the offering, the Sangha, did not know, not taking possession is the reason why a defeat offense is not produced, and not otherwise. However, if it is said that the offering is to be made to the Sangha, then it is stolen from the donor, not from the Sangha. If someone asks: Here it says, if one temporarily pretends to donate to the Sangha, and then they divide it, then there is no concern of stealing from the donor, because in reality he has completely given up those things. Therefore, it should be understood that the phrase "offering to the Sangha" is the idea of distribution. The so-called "offering to the Sangha" is synonymous with "distributing to the Sangha." It is precisely for this reason that it is said "to the Sangha." Otherwise, it should be said "for the Sangha" as the basis for proper giving. Therefore, it is only stolen from the Sangha, not from the donor. If it is stolen from the donor, then a defeat offense would be committed, and a gross offense would not be committed. If someone asks: Is the gross offense mentioned here referring to the action? That refers to stealing after filling it, here it refers to stealing after deciding. Without deciding, it is also not possible to distribute. Therefore, because the Sangha does not know, so it is not taken as one's own, so it is certain that the statement of committing a gross offense is correct. Then, what about the case where a Bhikshuni takes possession of the property of many people, she commits an offense of expiation? Here, the "many people" refers to the Bhikshuni Sangha. Similarly, in the Bhikshuni's division, the Bhikshuni Mahānandā said to the nun Lotus Garland, the World Honored One told her...

If you give (me) a container for menstrual cloths, we don't have it either, it is something to be given." She said this. She gave a box full of clothes to all the nuns, and Svandaga took it for herself. The nuns heard about it and said to the nun Lotus, "I gave the box full of clothes into the hands of Svandaga." This went on until the end. After that, when the nuns asked Svandaga for it, she did not give it, (the Buddha) said it was a downfall, how is this? Therefore, here, if the nuns who are given do not know, they will commit a gross offense, if they know and are certain, they will commit a Parajika offense, if they commit a downfall offense, why is this? Please tell me. Here it is said that Svandaga believed that the Blessed One had given it to us, so she took it for herself. The nun Lotus was also certain that this was not begged for the sake of the Sangha, so she gave it for the sake of the Sangha. Therefore, even if she takes it for herself because she is certain that "I have obtained this," it will not be considered a Parajika offense. Then, if a nun designates the property of the Sangha to a person and takes it for herself, she will commit a Nissaggiya Pacittiya offense, how is this? Here also there is no fault of taking what is not given, because the donor is manifest, and there is no intention to steal. The former is because of belief, the latter is because the donor is manifest, so there is a difference. Therefore, what is said is that taking possession is similar to transferring designation, but it is not transferring designation. Furthermore, designation is common to monks and nuns, while taking possession is not common, it is only for nuns. Similarly, designation is for changing what is not possessed into what is possessed, while taking possession is already one's own, that is the difference. It has been said in too much detail, so let's stop here. Then, why is it not obvious that not knowing that the owner has property, and not knowing what ownerless treasure is, for example, things in the temple that no one has taken, if stolen, will be a gross offense? Because it is unreasonable.
