If a Bhikshu steals with the intention of robbing, what will happen? If one approaches in order to protect people, the value should be calculated. If the items are complete, one will fail. If the items are incomplete, one will commit a serious offense. However, if one approaches in order to protect non-humans, if the items are complete, one will commit a serious offense. If the items are incomplete, one will commit a minor offense. In the Vinaya also, it is asked: If a Bhikshu steals a gold and silver necklace, will it be a defeat? The answer is: Is the value of the gold and silver necklace less than five Mashakas? If it belongs to non-humans, it will be a defeat, etc. The so-called "other" means not belonging to oneself. Here the scripture is: The foolish defeated one commits a serious offense because of the clothes he found himself. The so-called "not given," the scripture here is: Men, women, hermaphrodites, etc., have not given this. Although this is constituted only by "other people's land," it is also mentioned in order to avoid the heavy burden of previous occurrences. The so-called "complete value" means if all four parts of a Karshapana are complete. Here the scripture is, in the root of the story: Will stealing three Mashakas be a defeat? The answer is: If twelve Mashakas are one Karshapana, it will be a defeat. Will stealing more than five Mashakas be not a defeat? The answer is: If forty Mashakas are one Karshapana, it will be a defeat. In the inquiry it is also said: Will a Bhikshu stealing more than five Mashakas be not a defeat? The answer is: If the Karshapana is of great value, it will be a defeat. Thus, in the distinction it is said: Five Mashakas or more than five Mashakas, etc., appear, and it is not contradictory. That is a symbol of a quarter of a Karshapana. His Sena made a Karshapana with twenty Mashakas by the son of a peacock. Nowadays, sixteen Mashakas are one Karshapana, so four Mashakas will be a defeat. Mashaka refers to Pana. Karshapana refers to Nanaka. In the inquiry it says: Bi

What kind of 'masha'ka' is it that the Blessed One said that stealing five 'masha'kas' would lead to downfall? Twenty 'masha'kas' equal one 'lanka'. What kind of 'masha'ka' is it? Four 'kakas' are called one 'masha'ka'. 'Possessed by a person' means that what has already been possessed is possessed again, that is, when a person has the thought 'this is mine' about something and fully accepts it in their mind. In this way, the thing whose existence the owner knows is in a state of being connected to the owner, and if the existence of the thing is not known, it is not so. Here, the discourse comes from the 'Differentiation', there are two kinds of treasures: those with owners and those without owners. A monk recites secret mantras, thinking: O treasure without an owner, please come to me! But not the treasure with an owner. Thinking in this way, the treasure without an owner will appear, and until it appears before one's eyes, it will constitute a minor offense, but once it appears before one's eyes, it can be said to be theft, and the value must be estimated. If the items are complete, it will constitute a major offense, and if they are incomplete, it will constitute a minor offense. Here it says that knowing that the owner has wealth is called having an owner. Not knowing that there is wealth is without an owner, such as wealth that the owner of the land or the descendants of the treasure hunters have not noticed. If someone hides something and his descendants have died out and the king does not know about it, it is called without an owner. If one does not know that there is wealth, but wants to generate a path of action from the owner, why does it not lead to downfall? Here it says that it is like stealing something less than five 'masha'kas', because the path of action is small. Why is the path of action also small here? Because the act of possession has not arisen, the limbs of stealing are incomplete. Why does the absence of an act of possession constitute theft? Because the thing remains connected to the owner. Here, the discourse to be known comes from the 'Vinaya': There was a sick monk who said to the attendants: Prepare three kinds of food and barley porridge, and also offer it to the Sangha, and I myself will also enjoy it.
