If it is done like this, from the Vinaya scriptures, if a monk doubts whether a nun is dead or has killed someone, what will happen if he kills her because of this? Answer: He will commit a defeat. Doing so will not contradict each other. Here, the word "killing" refers to the path of actual action. If so, should those who are not the first doers also be mentioned? There is no need to mention it, because it is impossible to have the first doer now. If you look at it this way, it was impossible to have the first doer at that time either, because the Blessed One had already subdued the Maras of affliction at dawn under the Bodhi tree, and had the three trainings of discipline, concentration, and wisdom, and from the Pratimoksha Sutra, it is said that the Blessed One now separately teaches liberation with two verses. Then, the venerable Near-Guarded said that this was said in consideration of the establishment of offenses. If it is said that this is only the essence of the order of establishing offenses, then, reversing from the order of the novice's training, other orders are taught in the Vinaya. The remaining offenses arising from killing have been explained. The remaining offenses are to be shown, and for this, it is said: If one intends to kill a sentient being without mistake, and kills another kind, one commits a misdeed. If one despises an unexamined water bottle, there is no fault even if it is given as alms. That is the only thing that is not confused, and only the hidden thought, from other kinds than the human kind, such as animals and hungry ghosts. If one kills a non-human with the thought of a sentient being, one will commit a misdeed. Thus, without confusion, with the intention to kill, being another kind, thinking it is a sentient being, and the act of killing, these five are the limbs of a misdeed. Where these are not, there is no offense. Therefore, even if one gives alms from an unexamined water bottle, there will be no transgression, this is what is to be shown. If all the limbs of a misdeed are complete, then how should one properly and truly commit an offense? It should be known. Whoever uses water etc. with sentient beings, or pours hot springs etc., if a visible person dies, then for him, each sentient being will have a serious offense.

Whoever uses water with living beings, and roots, stems, etc., or pours hot liquids, etc., if there is a diligent protector of vows, for each and every living being visible to the eye, as many as die, that many offenses are verbally confessed. Asked: Venerable monk, if one uses water with living beings, or offers things with living beings to others, what happens? Answered: As many living beings as lose their lives, that many downfalls occur, and so on. In the "Differentiation" it is also said: If one irrigates with a ditch full of living beings, as many living beings as die, that many downfalls occur; as many living beings as do not die, that many misdeeds occur. Thus it is said. The reason why these downfalls are heavy is that killing living beings is a great unforgivable offense. Where does the term "visible" come from? In the "Miscellaneous" it is said: Venerable one, is it permissible to drink or approach unfiltered water? It is not. Venerable one, if it has been filtered, is it permissible to drink? It is permissible to approach. Thus it is said, so one should rely on this. Also, why rely only on what is visible, and not on a water filter? Because some tiny living beings, although visible, cannot be caught by a water filter. Likewise, in the "Differentiation" it is also said: There are two kinds of living beings: those that are visible to the eye, and those that can be caught by a filter. Thus it is said. Therefore, one should rely on what is visible, and not on a filter. The eye of an ordinary person without disease should observe when the water is not moving and without turbidity. Observe with a full pot, and separate the water from the dust with kataka, etc. The physical eye, not damaged by cataracts, etc., should observe when the water is not moving and without turbidity, not with the divine eye. Here, the text is from the "Miscellaneous": Venerable one, if one who has not exhausted defilements examines water with the divine eye, then that place is filled with intermediate state beings. The Blessed One said: The divine eye is inexpressible, therefore one should not examine it with the divine eye.
