They think, 'I will not do this, nor will I let others do it.' If he does or does not do it, they think, 'What effect does this have on me?' Therefore, there is no occasion to fall into defeat. Because it is accepted in the mind, it is established by the mind. Even the sound of serious violations and the words that summarize transgressions, for the increase of many transgressions, must be accomplished with the mind. Therefore, for the words of many transgressions, here it is shown as a grave offense. Likewise, for other sounds of grave offenses, one should examine them as they are in their own nature. For example, in the Vinaya Matters, a monk is sick and needs many provisions. His attendant thinks, 'The Sangha has already allocated property, so he should not be served.' He repeatedly thinks this, so he does not serve him, causing him to die, and afterwards he feels regret. The Blessed One taught, 'There is no falling into defeat, but it will become a grave offense.' and so on. Therefore, the sound of grave offense is shown in two ways: the sound of name and the sound of merit. Among them, the sound of name is a minor offense. The sound of merit is a major offense. Then, in the Differentiation, it says, 'There are two grave offenses, namely those arising from defeat and those arising from Sanghavasesa.' What does this mean? That is not a transgression, because they consider the two grave offenses to be small words. Likewise, transforming oneself into an image similar to an animal, and then killing sentient beings, if one thinks that one is a keeper of vows, then it is a root offense, otherwise it is only a minor offense. Oneself maturing and so on, transforming into the image of a tiger and so on, and then killing people. If one thinks that one is a monk, doing something that should not be done, then one will fall into a root offense. If not, one will only fall into a minor offense. Here, in the scripture it is asked, 'Venerable one, if a monk transforms himself into the embodiment of an animal and then takes a human life, what will happen?' The Blessed One taught, 'If he thinks that he is a monk, doing something that should not be done'

If the thought of a monk arises, then one will fall. If the thought of a monk does not arise, then one will commit a grave offense, as it is said in the scriptures. Here, the scriptures also say: In a dream, without training, or killing, unintentionally, or killing due to madness, then one does not fall, one should restrain. If the remaining limbs of killing are incomplete, then one commits a minor fall. If it is not a dream, if one has not abandoned the training, if one has the intention to kill, and if it exists naturally, if any one of these four is incomplete, then one does not commit a fall, but one should not restrain. The remaining six limbs are: being a person, being another, having the thought of it, not being mistaken, making an effort, and being dead. If even one of these six limbs of killing is missing, then it is only a minor fall, but if all the limbs are complete, then it is complete. Some say that in the limbs of killing, one should supplement with the words "without doubt." Here, the scripture is asked: Venerable, a monk doubts "Is this mine? Or is it not mine?", but in reality it is not his, if he kills it, what will happen? The answer is: He will commit a grave offense, but he will not commit an unpardonable offense. Therefore, one should not supplement with words, because even if there was previously the thought of "to kill or not to kill?", at the time of killing, one will undoubtedly determine who it is. If it is not like that, then it will not become killing. For all actions, there are three minds that enter without doubt: deliberation, determination, and initiation. First, the deliberation of "to do or not to do?" arises. Then, the determination of "to do" arises. After that, initiation arises, and by that the body is initiated. Therefore, that meaning should be understood uprightly. It should be understood uprightly like this: The so-called "to kill" shows the path of the actual action, and the effort of the path of action. Therefore, here it is said in terms of the effort of the path of action, and the answer to the question "one will commit a grave offense, but one will not commit an unpardonable offense" is reasonable.
