When abiding in ascetic practices, even for a single day, one should desire it. At that time, for the sick, the words of the wise are timely, and for the poor, there is no untimely time. Whatever meat and fish are given by the virtuous, one should abandon harm, lack of compassion, attachment to flavors, and the mind that seeks them out completely, and eat after examining what comes in the begging bowl. Roasted barley flour, oil residue, roasted rice flour, fish, and meat are said to be eaten to sustain life. Roots such as trees, fruits, and উৎপལ་ (Sanskrit Devanagari: উৎপলা, Sanskrit Romanization: utpala, Literal meaning: utpala), their preparation is timely. What is untimely is that the strained residue of water, wood, and fruits should be mixed with water for drinking. When yogurt and lees are mixed with juice in water, it is jaggery, tree sap, and alkaline. Jaggery, sesame oil, honey, ghee, molasses, fat, and curd are also included. Roots such as garlic, onions, chives, and scallions, trees such as cinnamon, sandalwood, and red sandalwood, and leaves such as neem and patola are mentioned. Flowers, dataki and bashaka, fruits, amla, baheda, haritaki, areca nut, kola, cardamom, and long pepper, sesame seeds, etc., are flavoring agents, as well as five spices, broth, alkali, hard resin, all trees, and beeswax, which are not eaten to relieve hunger, but are kept as medicine until they die. Whatever is mixed with untimely and timely, it is used according to the power of the timely. If there is another vessel with the same untimely side, one eats from one vessel on the fearless side. When eating together with parents, etc., there is no fault if there is no one due to shame. As stated in sutras such as the Sagatha Sutra, one should eat food with goodness and moderation. One should not eat with a full mouth or too much, and one should never speak with food in one's mouth. One should not do unpleasant things, one should not scatter, and one should not eat by destroying what looks like a stupa. One should not eat the remaining meat eaten by tigers, etc., or what is made on purpose. Whatever food is left over by crows, one should discard what is stained with saliva from the beak and eat it. One should not press one side of the foot on the base of the begging bowl, one should not wear shoes, and one should not wear single clothes. If a doctor advises, a patient should place his foot on his shoes and eat as he pleases. One should not say to the owner or giver, 'Give this or give from this.' The noble ones eat in order of attainment, and here it is forbidden for the sick.
