One should completely protect the vulnerable. Encountering the teachings of the Sage, life, even for a single day is difficult to find, whoever desires to live long, those too should fully partake. If the alms bowl has oil stains, upon seeing those juices, after removing it with any object, wash it three times and then partake. After eating, the smell in the mouth, cleanse with earth and dung, etc. With three handfuls of water or more, wash and rinse completely clean. Whether it has been touched by a non-bhikshu, if there is no doubt after observing, then eat. Otherwise, if it is seen to have been touched, then giving and receiving is needed again. When traveling on the road, one needs travel provisions, if no one is carrying them, with the thought of substitution, one should carry it oneself. If there is no other substitute, on the first day, cut off food. On the second day, about a handful, one may eat, not more than that amount. On the third day, two handfuls, from then on, do as you please. Having obtained it through one's own effort, one may eat in order to protect one's life. Digging the earth to obtain roots, or climbing trees to obtain fruits, when a bhikshu is facing death, one partakes in order to alleviate hunger. Regarding the prescribed transgressions, temporarily permitted due to circumstances. Regarding the naturally unwholesome acts, one with discipline would not do it even at the cost of life. If one wishes, one may eat together with relatives, with a good intention. If the road is dangerous and there is no container, it is also acceptable with a novice. When a practitioner is eating, hold the alms bowl with the left hand, while cutting food, etc., the hand should always be guarded with mindfulness. Wherever ignorant crows, recognize the food, discard the area near the beak's touch, one need not examine that food. Butter and sesame oil, brown sugar, etc., as well as the possessions of the Sangha, having taken them, due to forgetting mindfulness, what remains cannot be discarded. Whether by the Sangha or an individual, that which is permissible should be completely taken. When the time for work arrives, eat well and then begin the work. If brown sugar and rice flour are mixed, after thoroughly washing with clean water, even if consumed at an inappropriate time, there is no fault of food. Medicines, etc., that are suitable for the time, if mixed at the appropriate time, do not consume at an inappropriate time, after touching, it is not permissible not to give and receive. That which is suitable for the time is also like that.
