The Vinaya Verse. Saga Lha. The Vinaya Verse. Saga Lha. In Sanskrit: Vinayakarika. In Tibetan: The Vinaya Verse. First Chapter. Homage to the All-Knowing One! Homage to all Noble Hearers and Solitary Buddhas! Who gave even his own head, like a jewel radiating light, and also the consorts like a fully bloomed lotus of golden hue, diligently seeking without exception, completely rejoicing in attaining the supreme enlightenment, teaching for the sake of Dharma, discipline, and peace, I prostrate to him! Whoever obtains it will surely be liberated from the fears of the lower realms, cutting off all the bonds of existence and attaining nirvana, saving from the boundless ocean of samsara, becoming the sole vessel, I also pay homage to the Dharma taught by the Sugata! Whoever is full of all qualities, becoming a supreme object of offering, even if offering a little, the result is vast and greatly increases, all should prostrate to him, praised by the Sugata, I also pay homage to the noble assembly of eight excellent persons adorned with good conduct! Whoever taught the Vinaya, and whoever obtained the Vinaya, abandoning the untamed, becoming the master of discipline, truly abiding in the Vinaya, after prostrating to the teacher with the Dharma and the noble assembly, in order to tame the trainable beings, I will briefly speak starting from the Vinaya. The lazy and those with little wisdom are afraid of the many texts, they do not desire to enter the well-spoken ocean of Vinaya, even if they have qualities. Therefore, in order to lead them, with the great ladder of verses of the tireless goers, as the eternal heretics teach, greatly praised, rich in wealth, born in the excellent palace of the gods, obtaining samadhi and renunciation, this discipline has great fruit. Therefore, here, at all times, there is no purification without the Vinaya, just as with waterless washing, even if pleased, the dirt does not go away, just as without the moon, the night is not beautiful, similarly, the ordained who do not abide in discipline do not adorn the Victorious One's teachings. Therefore, after abandoning laziness, in order to be able to know what to do and what not to do, those who wish to be adorned with discipline should abide in the Vinaya with diligence.

Therefore, whoever understands the Vinaya, A Bhikshu who reverently practices it, Having himself become established in faith, Is a teacher who shows the precepts to be followed. Moreover, by the fourfold assembly, With great reverence, he is invited forward, Holding the precious treasury of the Buddhas, Of the past, future, and present. Also, for the benefit of the great beings, He strives to abide well in the sacred Dharma. This Bhikshu's own discipline, The aggregate of precepts is well-guarded, without damage. Any others who have regrets, All follow after him. Also, having fully ascertained the meanings, He obtains the excellent wise one. With Dharma, knowledge, and the Dharma, He defeats the opponents of other schools. In the monastery, no one can compete with him, In the midst of the Sangha, there is no fear. Therefore, he is the lamp of the directions, He makes the clear light shine forth. Wherever there is one skilled in the Vinaya, There, I am smaller than the heart. Thus, in immeasurable ways, The Able One spoke of the benefits of the Vinaya. Therefore, with reverence, One should strive to uphold the Dharma and Vinaya. A Bhikshu who has fully completed ten years, Is the nature of guarding all vows. With clarity and knowledge of all conduct, He can ordain a novice and confer full ordination.
