At what time of wandering, measure all that water at that measure. If doubt and regret arise due to defects in the vessel, it should be examined again, and used completely without doubt. When going to a distance of five ক্রোśa (krośa, a unit of distance), if there is a water strainer such as a cloth of liberation, then it is acceptable. With the thought of returning, going half a krośa is without fault, but with confidence in the meaning, it is okay to go very far. When going like a stream of water, there is no fault in drinking the examined water. If it is not mixed with other water, it should be examined at each krośa. When going against the current, it should be examined at each suspected place. When mixed with other water, it should be known in the same way as previously shown. After taking water from wells and so on, for whom that water belongs, and for the remaining deities there, recite the verses spoken by the Sugata (Buddha). One should never drink water with the mouth of the pot turned upside down. If leaves and so on are not found, there is no fault in drinking in a secluded place. The mouths of round strainers and so on must be covered with leaves and so on. After drinking water, if the pot and so on are not covered and are discarded, it is a fault. The dirt of the pot and so on should be washed thoroughly with effort. When it is time to dry, it should be dried as much as possible for the sake of suitability. A householder can only examine for a householder, but a śrāmaṇera (novice monk) cannot. A bhikṣu (monk) can examine for a householder and other śrāmaṇeras. Why is the examination done by that bhikṣu also suitable for a householder? Because the bhikṣu examines while abiding properly, not because of being negligent in learning. If there is dirt such as food in the water of wells, ponds, and so on, it should be filtered without hesitation to eliminate those discriminations. Householders and others, after thoroughly examining the water of wells and so on, can purify it. After knowing their condition, it is also permissible at inappropriate times. If there is no water when a bhikṣu goes to a cow shed and so on, if there is little, it is permissible to wash the feet with yogurt water or milk and so on. Vessels for spoken alcohol and urine should be completely abandoned. Vessels for ghee and so on should be completely used with fire and water. In order to abandon the liquid dirt licked by fish and turtles, suitable water is for thirst, not for inappropriate times.
