It is neither that nor not that. One does not want anyone to own the summer retreat. Without concealing the monastic robe, The monastic robe arises from entrustment, Materials such as cloth are allowed. For the sake of death, and also entrusted by death, And for the sake of the sick by the sick. Whatever is given by one who is about to depart, These five arise from entrustment. Within the last ten days, It is permissible to divide, If it is past the time of giving, When it is held is the main thing. What is the time for giving the monastic robe? The wise have truly taught this, Within the period of making restrictions, It is ten days, not more than that. Here, I myself with my own hand, Saying "extremely poor" to the patron, If it is placed, At no time is there fault for the monk. Whatever is obtained during the time of making restrictions, Everything belongs to the one who observes the summer retreat. Who is the one who does not observe the summer retreat, Or with whom does one make restrictions? One who dwells in a fearful place, From among the three monastic robes, One should be placed in the house, For the sake of desiring careful virtue. For the sake of necessity, elsewhere, Even if six days have passed, there is no fault, Even there, with one monastic robe, If the seventh dawn arises, one falls. In the summer, one obtains an intercalary month, It is greatly known as the later summer retreat. Where is it said to be a fearful place? It is definitely considered to be fearful of thieves. The fear of lions, tigers, etc., Should be known as having doubts. The fear of mosquitoes, flies, etc., It is said to be a different fear. In the remaining part of the ash month, For the sake of bathing, for the sake of completely concealing the body, The monastic robe called "coarse cloth of summer clothing," The one who observes the precepts seeks. This should be held for half a month out of the three summer months, If one seeks earlier or in the middle, or beyond that, Holding it is also said to be a transgression. The good cloth at the time of making restrictions, For the purpose of spreading a mat, Having first announced to the Sangha, One should also encourage those who do the work well. After the Sangha has truly allowed it, The noble Sangha shows respect, One gives up with only an announcement, How does one do it according to reason, After making turns, etc., One goes into the midst of the Sangha, Then, according to the ritual, One should spread the mat, There is great benefit for the monks, The teacher who desires benefit has truly spoken. The month of ten days

Certainty and, holding without examination, entering villages etc. without patched cloth. Repeated eating and, gathering and eating is without fault. Also going without being instructed. Between Pleiades and Cancer, spreading hard bedding is the appropriate time. Enjoying satisfaction and having made satisfaction, moving and rising from there. Summer not ended and separated from summer, and residing after summer, these four situations. A hidden novice, practicing the precepts, these have no benefit, only gain is not prohibited. Views and discipline with defilements, whoever is completely abandoned by the Sangha, and unlawful bias, likewise dwelling elsewhere in summer, these five situations have no gain and benefit. Here for the good and all the wise, there are merits and gains. For the Sangha's gambling gains, if those with ascetic practices control, they will experience suffering with the iron chains of abandoning offenses. Gains such as clothes and wealth, food and other miscellaneous items, both are transformed into gambling, this is strictly prohibited. The Sangha's giving to others, others' giving to this, gains are mutually exchanged, possessing misdeeds and truth, the actual objects are not examined. The Sangha being harmonious, for other Sanghas' gambling, gains are claimed as one's own, upon obtaining, they will be abandoned. For people, body images, stupas, and, animals, grass, and the sky, placing etc. on the ground, pillars are erected, houses etc. have misdeeds. Third fascicle. Guarding vows, diligent and proficient in its meaning, having abandoned what should be abandoned, then in order to rise from that offense, confess with sunset as the limit. After being urged by the wise, the second should be accepted. The examination as it was said, not doing so will result in offense. In order to remedy the offense, for one's own sake, robes etc., even a little should not be received from others. If this offense is not abandoned, one cannot be liberated elsewhere. Abandoning should also be known, robes etc. are called abandoning. Abandoning the of
