Adding to it becomes something to be abandoned. This is the abandonment of wool work. The abandonment of washing, which is the sutra that appears in the Vinaya-vibhanga. Explaining the abandonment of gold, which is taking precious things as one's own. Knowing that gold and silver are one's own, and having that thought, one commits the downfall of abandonment, which is one limb. It is manifestly completed there. Knowing that gold and silver are one's own, and also seeing it with one's own eyes, that is two limbs. Seeing gold and silver, and thinking that it is one's own, one commits a misdeed. When does one consider it one's own? Examining gold and silver for the sake of the patron, or holding it without being blessed by mantras, that is three limbs. Touching or taking it with one's own hand, or allowing it to be touched. If one allows another to take it, one commits the abandonment, possessing these five limbs, one commits the downfall of abandonment. Whatever the case may be. Regarding gold and silver, if one takes it from a container, or takes it with wood, or touches it in any way, one falls. Saying to another, "Take it," "Entrust it," "Take it away," "Put it down," or allowing it to be touched in any way, one will fall. Making copper into merchandise is a misdeed. Like copperware and coarse cloth, using it as merchandise, touching it oneself or allowing it to be touched is also a misdeed. Merchandise mixed with silver or gold, like Gedar, touching it is a downfall. The absence of downfall is for others. Regarding copper, if it is not used as merchandise like coarse cloth, touching other copperware is not a fault. Rusty, rough, dyed, grindstones and iron are also the same. Touching these things that are mentioned by name is also without fault. The same goes for novices. Monks and nuns are also not allowed to touch their own gold and silver. Dedicating it to the patron as ownership, undertaking ownership for the sake of accomplishing things, and dedication are all examinations. Dedicating it to the patron as ownership means that for the sake of the patron, the king or minister, thinking that it is theirs, holding and touching it for the sake of accumulating merit for them is without fault. From "accomplishing" to "and" means that if there is a person designated to a small patron in a householder's place, thinking that it is his for the sake of accumulating merit for him, touching and holding it is without fault. Dedication is examination, which means one's own.

It is permissible to hold and touch something blessed with mantras in order to purchase incomplete items such as the thirteen requisites. For the sake of the Dharma, it arises from nothing. Even though I have the thirteen requisites, if I bless them with mantras and set them aside as payment for purchasing requisites, the mantras will not be effective and it will become an act of abandonment and a cause for downfall. It is permissible to set something aside after considering it for use for the sake of the Three Jewels. The owner does not gradually destroy it either. Even if a patron, whether large or small, is designated to be on a long journey, it is permissible to touch gold and silver, considering it for use for that reason, and it is not considered that they are not a patron because of the long journey. Considering is for the sake of my own food. It is also permissible for me to hold gold and silver blessed with mantras as goods for food and provisions. It is also permissible to allow others to trade or touch for the sake of food for others. It is also permissible to hold a karshapana (karṣāpaṇa) for the purpose of entrusting that task. It is also permissible to hold a karshapana (karṣāpaṇa) for the purpose of entrusting others to exchange it for my own food and provisions. It is also permissible to hold and touch a pana (paṇa) for the purpose of offering meals to the Sangha and friends, and it is also permissible for the patron's owner to receive and hold a pana (paṇa) salary as payment for food. If it is used as goods for the road, even precious jewels, if I go alone on a long journey and cannot send provisions, it is permissible to carry and touch gold, silver, and even precious jewels as goods for provisions. Sell the glass orb for fire. It is also permissible to hold a glass orb of fire in order to expel monks without a monastery. It is also permissible to hold a flint and a mirror. Holding a glass orb that does not produce fire will become a downfall. Do not leave this in an unconcealed place. In order not to damage the glass orb of fire, keep it in a concealed place and do not let others see it. Do not show it to those who have not taken vows. Do not show the glass orb of fire to robbers and savages. The result of this is giving. If a savage or robber asks for fire, secretly take out the fire and give it without letting them see the glass orb. For water, the jewel candra-kanta. It is also permissible to hold a glass orb of water in order to produce and use water. The method of protection is the same. Hiding and protecting the glass of water, as well as taking water, begging from others, and giving, are like the glass of fire.
