If one hopes to obtain additional material for sewing a robe, it is permissible to keep it in a container, etc., for one month. If the hoped-for material arrives within ten days, one should sew it within ten days from the time it is obtained. If ten days pass and it is not sewn, it should be abandoned. Similarly, if the hoped-for material arrives within twenty days, but it is not sewn within twenty days, it should also be abandoned. If the hoped-for material arrives within thirty days, but it is not sewn within thirty days, one will incur the fault of abandonment. The limit for sewing that is not secure is two layers. If making a new large robe, it is permissible to sew two layers. The same applies to a cushion. If making a new cushion, it is also permissible to sew two layers. The top being clean and the bottom being stable is one layer. For robes of seven or five sections, if they are new, only one layer is allowed. If it is sewn in time, it can be two layers. Old large robes and cushions are allowed to be sewn with four layers. Old patches of five or seven sections are allowed to be sewn with two layers. The measure of being old is considered to be after one winter or spring season of use. There is no limit for wiping cloths. If a tailor collects and sews from wiping cloths, there is no limit to the number of layers, and it can be done at any time. If the material is worn out or thin, only the remaining material that is needed should be given. If a robe is worn out and thin, with holes, tears, or rips, it should be appropriately patched with whatever patches are needed according to the extent of the holes and tears. Do not excessively patch what is not needed. Do not give excessively. When making new sets of three robes and a cushion, or sewing old ones, do not exceed the prescribed number. If one sews excessively, one commits a fault and should also abandon it. According to the sutras, it is not permissible to sew more than the prescribed number. If one sews it and ten days pass, one will incur the fault of abandonment. One should also not recite mantras. Do not separate what is appropriate. If one makes new robes and cushions, or sews old ones, and after sewing according to the prescribed number, they later separate, one commits a fault. Similarly, it is because one did not think of sewing after having done the work. It is permissible to sew robes and cushions, and after sewing according to the prescribed number,

It is blameless to separate for the sake of washing and other tasks, thinking that it will be sewn back together after the work is finished. If it is separated casually and not sewn back together, it must be discarded after ten days. As the Vinaya allows sewing robes and cushions together, if they are separated and not sewn back together within ten days, or if the separated pieces are not blessed with mantras, it will also become a fault of abandonment. The pieces to be sewn together are from nine to twenty-five, excluding even numbers. If making a new great robe, it is allowed to use from nine to twenty-five pieces, without making a mistake in the number, like building a house, it can be thirteen, fifteen, nineteen, twenty-one, twenty-three, and twenty-five pieces. More than that is patching. More than twenty-five pieces are called piling up, and the mantra power of the great robe will not be formed. The mantra power of a patched robe can be formed. The first of the three is flat three and a half. The three robes of nine, eleven, and thirteen pieces, all the transverse pieces are two equal long pieces, one half of a long piece, and one half plus three, alternately sewn together. The second is flat four and a half. The three robes of fifteen, seventeen, and nineteen pieces, the transverse pieces are three equal long pieces, one half of a long piece, that is, four and a half alternately sewn at the beginning and end. The third is flat five and a half. The three robes of twenty-one, twenty-three, and twenty-five pieces, the transverse pieces are four long pieces, one half of a long piece, that is, five and a half alternately sewn at the end of the transverse. My three and five cubits should be dedicated to the elders. The allowed size for making the three large robes is, one's own cubit length, the width is three cubits, and the length is five cubits. Except for the shortened half cubit. If making the three small robes, the allowed size is, one's own cubit length, the width is three and a half cubits, and the length is five and a half cubits. The middle one is the medium size. If making the three medium robes, the allowed size is, my cubit length, the width is less than three cubits by half a cubit.
