Singleness: If trees are lush and their leaves intertwine to form shade, and are not separated by a wall or water, and the leaves are not intertwined, then wherever there is an obstruction, that is one boundary. It is the same if one enters under something like a tent. If the branches of a single tree trunk are unobstructed and intertwine to cover, then from the initial edge of the branches, up to the point where water drips from the leaves, all around is considered one boundary. The same applies to carts and boats. If a Dharma robe is placed on the surface beneath a boat or cart, and one sleeps on the ground beneath, one does not leave the boundary. If a tent or house is erected on a cart or boat, the inside is considered one boundary. If one initially erects it and places a Dharma robe on one's head and then lies down to sleep, one will leave the boundary. A boundary-less place is the edge covered by branches. If one stays in a monastery and sleeps on a cushion, the area reached by one's outstretched limbs is considered one boundary, and the extent to which one does not leave the boundary will be explained below. It extends one cubit outwards. Like the back of a temple, if one sleeps on a cushion in a monastery, then from the boundary reached by one's outstretched limbs, within one cubit all around, is considered one boundary, and one will not leave the boundary. A town surrounded by walls, with a luminous cart pulled by six oxen, is the road around it or the place where wild geese land. If one stays in a city of laypeople, from the boundary surrounded by the outer fence, the axle of a cart made of light, pulled by six oxen, up to the extent of the water's dominion, within that area, one may stay with one's Dharma robe or oneself, and even if there are differences in wealth and views within the city, as long as one stays with one's Dharma robe in one household, one will not leave the boundary. From the edge of the outer fence, wherever a wild goose flies and lands, either of these two extents is acceptable. If surrounded by dung, it is the dung of sheep and goats, or a path of land where people naturally avoid defecating. If one stays in a place surrounded by dung, from the place where the dung of sheep and goats falls, or the place where shameless people discard large and small amounts of excrement, whichever it may be, it is included within the boundary, and one will not leave the boundary. If surrounded by pits, it is twelve steps of stairs, or a path of large stones where rags are discarded.

If one dwells in a place surrounded by a moat, even if working in the moat, lowering a ladder of twelve steps from the moat, all the way to where it reaches, and throwing a large rag stone from the edge of the moat, rolling to where it rolls, even if I fall asleep, it belongs within the boundary and will not be separated. If one dwells in a city of laypeople in that place, no matter which boundary name is mentioned, it will not be separated, even if it is doing trivial things, and where the laypeople's rag holes and the winnowed chaff go, and where the laymen and women holding children go, and how much dust accumulates. Even next to a fence or house, where there is no dust accumulation, it belongs within the boundary and will not be separated. If one walks on a path without a boundary without separating from people, it is fifty bows less one bow. If one enters the path and walks, the robe goes ahead or remains behind, without being separated by water and ditches in between, if one sits flatly, within forty-nine bows in between, it is counted as one boundary and will not be separated. It is not another boundary. All the boundaries mentioned later, if they are not separated by water and walls, etc., the name of the boundary is not important, water and walls are important. From the middle to the end of the distance are different. Like a grove, where leaves and branches are densely intertwined, if it is within a large area, without being separated by water and walls in between, then one yojana around belongs to its own boundary and will not be separated. Abandonment of separation, that is, distinction. Abandonment of separation, the Sutra arising from the distinction of the Vinaya of downfall. Even if divided into pieces, it has not disappeared without being given away. Whichever of my three robes, after being blessed, becomes old, torn, and turned into pieces, the blessing has not disappeared, even if separated from it, it will be abandoned. If the robe is given to others, it must also be taken out (the blessing). Abandonment is not non-arising. After one of my robes has been abandoned, it returns from the state of having been abandoned and is re-blessed, or others commit the offense of abandoning the robe.
