It is defeated. Saying "I have this," showing it to others, and speaking for oneself is also defeated. For one's own sake, saying "There are arhats among these" is also a grave offense. Similarly, saying that one possesses any superior quality is also a grave offense. If one speaks approximately, it is not. If someone asks, "Who possesses such qualities as mentioned in the post-scriptural texts?" and then says, "I am," it is defeated. Do not prophesy without careful consideration. Do not say "This is" without realization or attainment; saying so is a misdeed. When Maudgalyayana was begging for alms, a Brahmin woman with a son asked him, "Is the child in the womb male or female?" Maudgalyayana did not consider what would happen in the future, but at that moment, knowing that the fetus was male, he said, "It is a boy." When a girl was born, the group of six bhikshus accused him, saying, "Maudgalyayana lied." The Buddha then established the rule, "Do not prophesy without careful consideration." This is "speaking," that is, "distinguishing." This is the sutra that appears in the Vinaya-vibhanga concerning defeat due to lying. If one says, "I have fallen from the qualities I have attained," it is not an offense if it is not said by a superior person. Regarding any superior quality, if one says, "I have fallen from the qualities I have attained," superior qualities do not fall from the qualities one has attained; saying so is also a defeat. If a superior person intends to speak here, saying things with the same meaning is a grave offense. Intending to say that one possesses superior qualities, holding a fruit in one's hand, saying "I have obtained the fruit," putting one's hand in flowing water, saying "I have entered the stream," and being lazy, saying to a non-learner, "The Arhat has finished learning," saying "I am not a non-learner" in the manner of a non-learner, and regarding the order of the seven types of learners, like learning letters or reciting, saying what the teacher has said, whichever of these one says is a grave offense. Saying the opposite is also an offense. Thinking of saying "I am an Arhat," but saying "I have entered the stream" is also a grave offense. Similarly, if one speaks incorrectly about any superior quality, it is a grave offense. Sending away with a mistaken idea is also an offense. If I speak like you, I can attain stream-entry, and in order to obtain wealth for myself, I simultaneously speak of possessing superior qualities.

Thinking that if one does not possess what one has attained, one should be punished, and saying, "If you can do as much as I can, then it is acceptable," if one allows him to try, then one commits an increasing offense. Later, even if it is truly not produced, it is not that it is not. As stated at the end of the sutra, "My saying that is false, not possessing qualities, do not try," even if one says this, one will not fail to commit an increasing offense. Speaking means writing it down. The failure of false increasing offense is a sutra that appears from the questions in the Vinaya. Increasing offense refers to a Bhikshu Arhat, that is, a superior kind of clothing, etc. Becoming a false increasing offense means saying, "You are a Bhikshu Arhat, a poor kind of clothing and food, etc.," in order to pretend to be an Arhat, without speaking, sitting in silence, that is an increasing offense. A Brahmin, that is, a Bhikshu practicing pure conduct, when one says this, sitting in silence, abandoning sinful Dharma, abandoning sinful Dharma, abandoning the ten non-virtuous deeds, when one says this, sitting in silence, the six faculties of a Bhikshu are completely subdued, meditating on impermanence and impurity, the six faculties are completely subdued and do not pursue objects, when one says this, sitting in silence, concealing, the six faculties are pacified, without distinguishing the six objects, one prevents them, when one says this, faith and mindfulness abide closely, guarding, guarding afflictions and sinful Dharma, when one says this, believing and sitting in silence, a practitioner, cultivating patience and exhausting outflows, when one says this, believing and sitting in silence, if one does this, believing in silence. Praising with these names, whichever one, when praising and speaking, believing and sitting in silence, that is an increasing offense. If one says, "As you have said," that is a failure. That is a Bhikshu Arhat, using these names to call, if one does as such and speaks it out, one will commit an increasing offense. Take my alms bowl, if you are an Arhat, take my alms bowl, when one says this, taking it in silence, entering the room, if you are an Arhat, enter my room, when one says this, entering the room in silence, sitting on the seat, if you are an Arhat, sit on the seat, when one says this, sitting on the seat in silence, washing hands.
