Homage! Defeat by killing, which is separation. Defeat by killing, from the Sutra arising from the separation of the Vinaya. If a limb of a human being is cut off, it is a gross offense. If a sentient being belonging to the human race has a limb cut off without the intention to kill, it is a gross offense. Similarly, cutting off feet, hands, and fingers of hands and feet is also a gross offense. A certain Brahmin struck a blow with a stick for the sake of the group of six, Upananda. Upananda reported to the king, argued with the Brahmin, and without investigating the cause, sentenced five hundred Brahmins or one person to have their hands cut off. If there is no intention to kill, and the hand is cut off and death occurs, it is still a gross offense. Setting fire to a thicket is also a gross offense. Setting fire to a thicket of plants, etc., knowing that there are sentient beings, each sentient being that falls is generally one gross offense. If one knows that there are gods and spirits and sets fire, it becomes two gross offenses. If one knows that there are people and sets fire, one commits a defeat. Selling a person with hair is also a gross offense. Being happy to sell a person as a slave, selling them is also a gross offense. Handing over a thief to the king's court is also a gross offense. If one's own property is taken by a thief, and in order to catch the thief and recover the property, one hands the thief over to the king without knowing whether they will be killed or not, it is a gross offense. If one knows that the thief will be killed by the king, and still hands them over, there is both a gross offense and a defeat. Defeat by killing belongs to minor matters. Defeat by killing, from the Sutra called Minor Matters of the Vinaya. To indicate (a hiding place). If a person to be killed flees and hides, and a monk sees them. If pursuers come and ask, and knowing that they will be killed, one tells them, it is a gross offense. If one is seized from the indicated place and killed, one commits a defeat. For example, a mother's womb. If five or six people are to be killed, and one flees and hides, without asking the pursuers. If one indicates the hiding place of someone who is not friendly to oneself, causing another to be seized and killed, it is a gross offense. A gross offense is killing oneself. If a monk kills himself, it is a gross offense. If one does something unwholesome with a mind not indicated in the scriptures, it is an offense of wrong-doing. Without the intention to kill, strike, or shoot, if one casually says, "I will shoot you, kill you, hit you," it is an offense of wrong-doing. Without the intention to kill, throwing a stone, etc., and a person, etc., dies, it is also an offense of wrong-doing. Accomplished because there is no target.
