I am the respect of the boundary. Stealing fields is to demarcate the boundary and say, "Steal only up to here." Stealing in this way incurs a defeat. If the owner of the property does not give it but instead makes offerings, it is the same as what follows. The boundary is not what is meant here if it is moved after being established. After changing and establishing the mu, boundary, or mark of the field, if the value is calculated from there and it is sufficient, it incurs a defeat. Taking it openly, but not obviously, is stealing. If one steals while seeing it and the owner of the property does not see it, it incurs a defeat. Seizing by force is forcibly occupying it. Stealing by seizing with force incurs a defeat if one does not run away again. In short, if one listens and acts as I do, it incurs a defeat. I am not like that. If I or someone else steals it, but then runs away and comes back, there is no offense. If one does not think of the connection to what is being stolen, then one does not understand. In order not to incur a defeat, if one steals inferior cloth that is not worth enough, but good cloth appears inside, there is no defeat if it is returned, it is a gross offense. A similar chapter will also appear later, the previous one was about gold and bottles. This one is about the quality of cloth, etc., the rules are just slightly different. A gross offense is if someone takes something and it is stipulated that it is theirs, if one steals someone else's, it is a gross offense. If there are many monks and they are considered thieves, and they each take what they get by means, if others get it but the owner does not, it is also said to be a gross offense, this is what Visuta said. If the owner is forced by the thief's accomplice, and if they do not steal they fear being killed, thinking of giving the due share to the thief's accomplice, if they enter among the thieves and do not take a share, it is a gross offense, this is what Vijaya Varma said. Taking things from a graveyard with an owner is also the same. There are four kinds of owners of the corpse's belongings in the graveyard: the king entrusts the corpse's belongings for livelihood and for work; the corpse's belongings are entrusted to the corpse for paying taxes; the corpse's belongings are entrusted to the corpse as ransom for killing and given to the corpse. The last one, stealing from the belongings controlled by the executioner is a gross offense. The previous three are defeats, this is what is said in the टीका (ṭīkā). Some Khenpos say that the corpse's belongings are unclean and the desired share is small, so it is said to be a gross offense. Roots and resin and trunks and leaves, flowers and fruits and growing trees, etc.
