Taking items without asking is a downfall. Do not pierce yourself, nor have others pierce. In order to take the belongings of a corpse, I will not wound the unasked corpse myself, nor will I have others wound it. If I wound or have others wound it, it is a downfall. One should freely use toothpicks, water, toilets, excrement, and land for resting. If a monk comes from somewhere and says to a friend who is already sitting, "Rest a while," even if he is not instructed to use these five things, the phrase "rest a while" implies that he is included in the scope of free use, and there is no fault in using them without taking or requesting. If relatives are unwilling, forcibly seizing a monk or novice, if brothers and relatives do not give from someone who has ordained or taken full ordination, if they come to seize him, the monk should grab one hand. If the one who comes to seize him grabs one hand and pulls him away, if the monk says the hand he is holding hurts, he should let go. If the one who is seizing says the hand he is holding hurts, he should not give him up. Taking without giving belongs to the branch of a defeat. Taking without giving is a defeat, this is a sutra that appears from within the branch of the Vinaya. Four Kakani are equal to one Mashaka. Calculating the value of one-eighth of a silver zho: one silver lang is equal to five Geder, one Geder is equal to four Kauni, one Kauni is equal to sixteen Pana, one Pana is equal to eighty cowrie shells, twenty cowrie shells are equal to one Kakani, sixteen Kakani are equal to three hundred and twenty cowrie shells, which is one-eighth of a silver zho. Calculated in this way, cowrie shells are less than one-eighth of a silver zho. Five is fixed, which is one-fourth of a Karshapana. When the Buddha was alive, one-fourth of a Karshapana was equal to five Mashaka, calculated in this way, it was one-eighth of a silver zho, so it was a loss. Now four Mashaka are equal to one-eighth of a silver zho, so four Mashaka are a loss. Wherever there are twenty Mashaka, that is called Pana. When the Buddha was alive, when twenty Mashaka were calculated as one Karshapana, just as it was stipulated that a loss would occur with five Mashaka, now, no matter where, if there is something that has not decreased as before, it should be calculated in the same way. When stealing, one should calculate and stipulate according to the place and time. A monk catches a thief

If observing the location and the seasons of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, the value is assessed according to the worth of the market price (paṇa). If something similar to this sutra appears later, the valuation between the two is like rice, considering the location and time. This market price (paṇa) itself is also valued considering the location and time. The ultimate priceless treasure is also like that. Stealing a priceless treasure does not mean it's not a defeat because it's invaluable, but because the quantity is large, the number of defeats does not increase, but it is one defeat. Even something of small value is included. Even stealing something of little value, like a sesame seed, does not constitute an offense, but it becomes serious. The relics of the Buddha are priceless treasures. The relics of the Buddha are also invaluable and cannot be assessed. If stolen, it is like stealing a priceless treasure, constituting a defeat. Taking it for offering constitutes a minor offense. If without the intention to steal, taking the relics of the Buddha for offering constitutes a minor offense. If taken with the intention to steal, it constitutes a defeat. Copying is not an offense. Not giving the divine letters as a template to others, but secretly borrowing them to copy and then returning them is not an offense. If taking the divine letters arbitrarily with the intention to steal, it constitutes a defeat. Stealing after hearing, at that time, the object of theft. If stealing after dividing the property, for the divided part, the value is assessed according to the value after the division. The content before this sutra is about the explanation of whether it constitutes a defeat from the aspect of property. Ownerless things refer to the unpleasant sound of the north. Like the property of the unpleasant sound of the north, because there is no thought of considering it one's own, it is like ownerless property and can be used freely. If used with the intention to steal, it constitutes a major offense. That is like one's own thing. If stealing the property of the unpleasant sound of the north, just like stealing one's own property, taking it with the intention to steal constitutes a major offense. At that time, oneself is the owner. A monk became attached to his alms bowl and died, and was reborn as a snake in that bowl. If stealing such a bowl, it is not considered the property of the previous monk, but is considered the property of the snake. He passed away like a god. Sharira
