La'o. The path. Apart from the four root downfalls, taking from a person's property is considered one branch. If counted as ten branches, then as stated in this sutra, taking from a person's property, as mentioned earlier, is counted as two branches. Even if counted as a downfall with seven branches, these two are still counted as branches. There, it is understood. Recognizing that it is property belonging to a person's lineage is one branch. The owner of the property has not given it up in their mind and still considers it their own, which is another branch. If these ten branches are complete, it is a downfall. If not complete, it is a gross offense. If counted as a downfall with seven branches, these two are counted as one. If lost by the owner but not given up in the mind, hope is not abandoned. If clothes and property are scattered as if carried away by wind and water, and the owner of the property has the hope of finding them again, stealing them is a downfall. If there is no hope of finding them again, it is considered ownerless property. Offering to a living being makes it the owner. Stealing from offerings to the Buddha and Dharma, or offerings to gods and demons, which are protected, is a downfall. Stealing from living beings like birds and deer that are adorned is also a downfall because the owner is a person. Giving for consumption is not a continuous thought. Stealing offerings of food, grass, and water to livestock is a gross offense because the livestock consumes and destroys the offerings. Not being included means not being owned. Stealing deer, birds, and wild animals that are not released or trapped, and are not within reach, is considered ownerless property. Setting fires to catch deer, birds, and wild animals. Setting traps and fires to drive away deer, birds, and wild animals, or being within reach, or not being within reach but marked like territory, or returning like dung beetles, stealing them means they are owned, so it is a downfall. Stealing from within the enclosure is also a downfall. If not included, it is considered an object. Whether the owner of the property is a person or an animal, if one thinks of stealing unclaimed property regardless of who it belongs to, it is a downfall if the owner is a person. If it belongs to livestock, it is a gross offense. Thinking of returning it if it belongs to a person, even if it belongs to a person, taking it,

If returned, it is not considered a transgression. When stealing, it follows the order of place and time. The value of stolen goods is calculated, such as barley and rice, and is valued according to the seasons of summer, winter, autumn, and spring. Like in southern Nepal and Tibet, the value of the same property varies, so it is also calculated according to the value of the place or location itself. If complete, it is considered a transgression, such as musk and coral. There is no downfall for unwanted items. If a bottle, carrying pole, or hat is stolen, if there is something in the bottle, the carrying pole and hat are valuable, and if it is returned because it is unwanted, it is not considered a transgression. The hat, carrying pole, and bottle themselves are used to calculate the value. Regarding one's own or another's property, if one sees that property as one's own and uses it, or uses it temporarily, or uses a friend's small item without saying "borrowing it," or with a trusting heart, uses something that a friend trusts and would not be unhappy about, or gives it to others, or uses property in common, or agrees to use it beforehand, or uses it with immediate contempt, like these situations, if there is no intention to steal, there is no fault. Furthermore, if there is no intention to steal. If there is no intention to steal, such as taking something in hand to see if the property is good or bad, or taking something to give to someone else to steal, saying "Give it to me," if one does not know it is stealing, and one has no intention to steal, and one takes it and gives it to others according to their words, etc., there is no fault. It is also permissible to mistakenly let go out of compassion. In the time of Ananda's son of giving, Stoka, when thieves robbed, Maudgalyayana, out of compassion for the two thief sons, transformed into most of the soldiers and threatened them. The thieves released their sons, and the Six Groups argued that they had committed a transgression, so it was stipulated that there is no fault for what is done out of compassion and illusion. In all cases, there is also the fault of association. The four root downfalls, remaining downfalls, and transgressions are confessed separately, and much is learned. This transgression is done by the Five Groups at the beginning, and at the time of association, whatever it is, there is a fault. That is, in this root group, it is a gross offense. Any of the four root downfalls is the initial downfall, and at the time of association
