When refuting others, do not refute when it is related to work, but refute when it is free. Do not forget mindfulness and awareness. Like refuting from actions, hearing, and seeing, is it sinful or not to refute, and think about whether you have exaggerated or not exaggerated what you have seen and refute. Do not completely conclude. Like above, when refuting, do not refute in front of virtuous practitioners and householders, but refute in a secluded place. Do not be indiscriminate of occasions. Like the above Sutra Pitaka, do not refute without distinguishing occasions. If it happens, resolve it there. In terms of conduct, each bhikkhu should, after everyone has distinguished the occasion, even if he refutes without distinguishing the occasion, there is no fault. If he does not remember, he should be reminded. Like below, after distinguishing the occasion, if he refutes a bhikkhu but does not remember the other person's fault, he should refute with a sign. Do not do this, but add words here. When refuting others, ask to distinguish the occasion. If you cannot distinguish the occasion, add words and explain below. The venerable one should add words. Like above, if you can distinguish the occasion but cannot distinguish it, say that the two of us cannot walk away separately in a disrespectful place, so sit here for a while. Do not leave here without asking me. Like below, if you cannot distinguish the occasion, warn him, I have a refutation for you, do not leave separately until you ask me. Venerable one, there are words of investigation. Like below, if you cannot distinguish the occasion, warn him, words of investigation, I have a refutation for you, do not leave separately until you ask me. Even if he is not subdued in this way, do not speak. Like above, if you have done it but he is still not subdued and cannot distinguish the occasion, then do not speak about the things that ask me about the Dharma and so on. Prevent this also by speaking and so on. If you speak to those bhikkhus who cannot distinguish the occasion, they will not answer. If they are sitting on the side of the road or in the village, avoid and walk away. However, if you take the method of dwelling like below, and still have not subdued and cannot distinguish the occasion, warn all the Sangha not to dwell with him. However, this is about expulsion. If, like the method below, you make him happy and distinguish the occasion, warn all the Sangha not to act righteously with him.

Do not persuade in all places, nor abandon from the discipline. If you establish a vow and do it together, it is also confession. Like attacking from behind, the two of being unable to argue and distinguish are included. If the Posadha and arising from discipline are combined into one, even if not reported to the Sangha, it can be tolerated. Arising from discipline and Posadha can also be done together. If it is not gentle after distinguishing, then use a stake (Tibetan: ཕུར་པ་, peg) to punish. Like attacking from behind, if arguing because of a mistake, then pray for distinction. After distinguishing, if the words are not gentle and scold again, then use the words of punishment with a stake, and the words of punishment with a stake will be explained below. Here, in a certain grand blessing ceremony, or on a certain thing, I say what I want to say, and then say the downfall, pointing out the fault, and thus abandon it. As stated in the upper Sutra, if it is said that the words are not gentle after distinguishing, then at this place and time, or when arriving at other places and temples, or when meeting under trees and beside houses, starting from the name of committing a downfall or fault, refute with this statement. After doing it, abandon and leave from him. Like discipline, view, behavior, and livelihood, discussing all of these and so on will give rise to actions related to the root. If refuting others for acting in this way, there is no fault, and it is permissible to refute. Do not do it with evil roots. When refuting others, do not refute because of fear of being deceived by superficial phenomena, but if you are sure that there are reasons for seeing, hearing, and doubting, then you can refute. Here, things are true, but not causes. Even if others really have faults, if you have not seen them clearly, do not refute. Even if you refute, do not value it, because it will become the fault of refuting any of the five downfalls, which will be explained in "seeing." Even if the faults of others are true, if you think a lot and do not doubt, or the faults of others are true, but for words that do not learn words, if you do not believe and refute, it is not valued, and the person who refutes will be combined with the downfall of refuting. What you have seen with your own eyes, and the layman who cuts his throat because of faith will never give up the Dharma, etc. Refuting others for the three previous evil deeds, etc., even if the things themselves are not at fault, the refutation is valued, and it will be combined with the content of the refutation.
