One should not wear shoes called "Nike." It is a transgression to wear shoes called "Zee Nee Zee Nee," and so on. Furthermore, one should not wear shoes that are excessively protruding, nor shoes that make loud noises. Unexamined field work does not count. If the middle part of the shoe swells due to being soaked in water, it should be secured sequentially in the front and back. Shoes that cover the toes and have leather wrapped around the heel are permissible to keep, without fault, in order to avoid slipping when climbing a vulture carcass or going uphill, and to avoid damage when going downhill. Some say that the excrement of aquatic creatures, as well as saliva or spittle from snakes that have passed by, or contact with grass that then touches the feet, can become poisonous, so it is permissible to keep shoes with uppers, without fault. Shoe uppers are also permissible. It is permissible to wear shoes with high uppers. In places where it turns to hail, hats and high uppers are also permissible. In places that are particularly cold and have hail, it is permissible to wear hats and shoes with high uppers. A bhikshuni in the center of a village may wear a hat and shoes. In remote areas where there is hail, it is permissible to wear a hat and shoes. Do not use shoes for offerings. When prostrating and making offerings to the Three Jewels, the Khenpo, and the five Acharyas, do not walk around wearing shoes. Do not wear any part of sentient beings such as lions, tigers, leopards, and water buffalo on the body. Do not wear or decorate shoes with the skin, teeth, bones, claws, etc., of the aforementioned creatures. Ordinary cattle, untamed horses, and other striped wild animals are also included. Do not wear, use, or adorn the aforementioned items as if they were fine cloth. Do not slap shoes. Do not slap dusty shoes, nor slap the contents inside. In order to remove dust, one may wipe with a damp cloth, but instead of slapping dusty shoes as one would the back, one should wipe the shoes with a damp cloth, and after wiping to shake off the dust, hide it away. Mend the shoes. If the shoes are torn, mend them, and the method will be explained later. If one is to do an unseemly act, do it in a secluded place. In order to avoid many people seeing the mending of shoes, do it in a hidden place. Therefore, one should carry needles and thread and sewing tools in order to wander or reside.

It is not a sin to carry bear skin for the benefit of the eyes. Spread it on the place of the feet. Carrying it like a lid can be used as a cushion and to wipe the feet. The bear skin offered to the Buddha is placed at the door of the scented room. If you offer bear skin to the Buddha, put it at the door of the scented room and wipe your feet, which is beneficial for the eyes when walking back and forth. You can wear shoes without uppers. It is not a sin to wear shoes made of bear skin for the benefit of the eyes. One can sit or lie down when it is windy. When it is windy, it is permissible to lie or sit on bear skin because it is beneficial. All situations that are examined with wisdom require this. If you sit on bear skin, carry it for the benefit of phlegm that has been observed with wisdom. Know that it is beneficial to touch the fur. Carrying bear skin like a lid, it is not the flesh that is touched, but the fur that is beneficial. Even if there are many layers of shoes without uppers, it is okay. Even if shoes without uppers are made with many layers of leather, only one layer sticks to the foot. If the bear skin is made with the fur facing up, there is no sin even if there are many layers.
