Do not trample before it is trampled. As mentioned in the previous sutra, things that have already been trampled, damaged, and injured, etc., that are not suitable for seeds, have already been trampled, so there is no need to trample them initially. Steam is not fire. Seeds, etc., are scorched by the heat of steam, and contact is also included in the examination by fire, so there is no need to examine them later. When understood correctly, the main thing is to examine the overall shape of the fruit with fire. For things like barley and fruit that are gathered in large quantities, there is no need to examine each grain individually, it is enough to touch the entire pile with fire. In one aspect of it, what is gathered will not change or increase. According to the Mūlasarvāstivāda Vinaya, it is not enough to touch only one surface with fire, all the outer surfaces must be touched with fire, then it is considered examined. What a bhikṣu does is also considered an examination. Later, among the five or seven ways of examining seeds, other examinations done by bhikṣus, except for examination by fire, are also considered examinations, and there is no fault even if they are eaten. A hesitant bhikṣu is like an incorrectly calculated account. If a bhikṣu eats food examined by fire, it is not considered examined, so there is a fault. It is the same if it has not been examined. Within the boundary, making large offerings, or large offerings that have not been blessed with mantras, are also considered examinations, and there, other examinations besides examination by fire are also without fault. Examination by fire is like cooked food in a bhikṣu's residence. Seven-day medicine and lifetime medicine that have not been soaked in cold water cannot be eaten. Seven-day medicines such as jaggery, honey, ghee, and vegetable oil, etc., and lifetime medicines, etc., when eating, should have others soak them in cold water. If eaten without examination, or if one examines oneself, there is a fault. What has not deteriorated cannot be eaten before noon. Coarse rice, grape juice, and jaggery water, etc., which are suitable for drinking in the afternoon, should also be soaked in water before drinking, and if drunk without examination, there is a fault. Seeds cannot grow. This is about the downfall of seeds, from the Vinaya-vibhaṅga. Explaining the downfall regarding sexual intercourse, it is done to twelve kinds of people, any work of the twelve people appointed by the Saṅgha is acceptable.

If I am unfair and inflict suffering on myself, falsely accusing and spreading it, one falls into a downfall, one branch. It also applies to those who are not appointed. If the Sangha appoints someone to the work of the twelve people through the process of solicitation and request, then appointing someone who is not appointed, and if one scolds anyone who does any of the work of the twelve people, one also falls into a downfall. It also applies to those whose conduct has ceased. If one scolds someone who has arisen from doing any of the work of the twelve people, saying, "You are unfair to me and inflict suffering on me," one also falls into a downfall. If one is distracted or for one's own sake, one spreads what one has heard and shows it to others. To be distracted and spread it means that one has said, "You are unfair to me and inflict suffering on me," and that what I have said is spread to any of the twelve people, and that person hears it again, and that one also speaks falsely about what has not diminished, four branches. The root is to be counted. The measure of falling into a downfall is that the Sangha does not abandon the instruction, "Do not say such things," but the Sangha instructs, "You do not have morality and engage in wrong conduct, and you belong to those who do not have morality," and if one does not abandon it, one falls into a downfall. One falls into a downfall if one possesses these five branches. Otherwise, one only commits a misdeed. As in the latter part of the Sutra, if the Sangha does not instruct and speaks and spreads until it is counted, and if words of spreading come out of one's mouth without thinking of spreading, one commits a misdeed. It is not good if one cannot even intend a small part. The person who is distracted and spreads among the twelve people is an untamable and violent person, and when the time comes to fight again and hold grudges, one should instruct, "Do not say such things," and it should also be done by placing it within the category of offenses without counting it. The Bhikshu who is released from the instruction, "Do not speak to the one who spreads," should also be appointed from those who are skilled in means and able to resist. If I am hostile to that person, I will not appoint him to the work. Whatever work is appointed by the twelve people, if one appoints a work from another Bhikshu, I will not appoint a Bhikshu who has hostility to the work. If it is necessary to appoint someone to the work, one should appoint and place a Bhikshu who has no hostility. Spreading. The downfall of distraction and spreading is complete. Now, I will explain the downfall of speech. To not count is not to reverse the answer to the instruction, similar to spreading in the latter part.
