For each downfall, if it transforms into each non-root offense and has been confessed, then it only counts as one downfall. If you pull out (a plant), even if it's not completely pulled out but just transplanted, it's a downfall. Pulling out young plants and transplanting them is also a downfall. If you pull fish eggs and aquatic plants out of the water, you will commit a downfall. If there are fish eggs in the water, or aquatic plants whose roots are not firmly planted, even if they end up on land, or are transplanted to another body of water, you will commit a downfall. Half refers to swallowing a fruit without chewing it. If you swallow it whole without chewing, then it's half a downfall, which is a non-root offense. Saying "It would be better to cut this down," or instructing someone to cut it down, is also a downfall. Even if you secretly say, "It would be better to cut down this tree," and have someone cut it down, or if you think hopefully, "If I cut down this tree, I hope it will become good lumber," it's a non-root offense. If it's a tree conjured through illusion, cutting it down is not an offense. Similarly, if you mistake different seeds for the same kind, it's a downfall. If you intend to ruin barley but ruin rice instead, you will commit a downfall. Similarly, whether it's a plant or a seed, if you intend to ruin one but ruin another, you will commit a downfall. Bark, etc.: peeling off bark that has grown from a tree, but whose roots are still slightly attached to the tree; or peeling off rotten wood or burls that are attached to an old tree; or picking yellowed leaves; or picking blooming flowers, i.e., flowers that have already bloomed and are about to wither; or picking ripe fruits, i.e., fruits that have already ripened and are about to fall off; or cutting down half-dead trees. The actions listed above are all considered "cutting to death," which is a non-root offense. If the root cause of these actions is not natural, then it's not (a downfall). Unlike the cases explicitly listed in the Vinaya, if it's not picking unbloomed flowers and fruits, unyellowed leaves, bark that hasn't grown from the tree, the roots of fruits and flowers, and actions that don't approach fruits and flowers but approach old trees, etc., it's a downfall. Cutting a tree at the junction of the tree is a non-root offense. Half refers to the seed that has been planted but has not sprouted roots. Seeds of barley or rice that have been planted but have not become seedlings, and are still seeds

Even if the land is damaged and only the roots of grass remain, there is a minor offense if it is made unable to grow. Kinds such as pebbles, mushrooms, soil wool, tiles, and half-cut pieces of cloth. Any of these things mentioned by name, if made unable to grow, there is a minor offense. Semen, hot ashes, etc., if taken from the stomach, intestines, branches, etc., or smeared on the mandala, there is no downfall if that is the intention. Semen, etc., if it enters the stomach and the path of going up and down, or goes under things taken from stones and trees, etc., or after the mandala is made, for things like making seeds unable to grow, if there is no intention of making seeds unable to grow, but the seeds become unable to grow incidentally while doing other things, there is no offense. Cutting reeds, etc., if they become narrow and are bound, even if it is not so, it will not be liberated because of it. Monks, if one person is bound by a wild man and is about to be killed, and there is one among the wild men who knows the rules of monks, he says: It is not right to kill a monk, tie him up with grass and leave him there, according to his precepts, the grass cannot be cut, it must be left as it is tied. After saying that, he tied him up with reeds and left him there. One king went hunting, and was bewildered by seeing that the person was a monk, tied up with grass by the wild man, according to the precepts, the grass cannot be cut, so please stay here. The king also developed faith, and the king himself untied him with his own hands, covered him with clothes, etc., and let him go. Therefore, it is stipulated that if a situation like this occurs where someone is bound by grass and their life is in danger, there is no offense in cutting the grass, it is allowed. That is not one person, but another person. As stated in the Vinaya, if many monks are bound, they must try their best to cut the grass, and if one monk who should fall cuts the grass, in order for me to be liberated, all the others will be liberated before I cut the grass. Things that are not seeds do not cause offense. Things that cannot be used as seeds, even if they are made unable to grow, will not cause a downfall. Examining by touching and planting with fire, using knives and nails, using parrots and rotten things, pulling out and crushing, walking and cutting, etc. For the five kinds of seeds, touching and examining these things mentioned by name is permissible, and will not cause a downfall or minor offense. Not seeds
