Regarding what the Blessed One said, that a Bhikshuni who steals five mashakas will fall, is it the case that if a monk Bhikshu steals a hundred or a thousand mashakas with the intention to steal, he will not fall? Yes, if he steals four mashakas at a time, and never five. On the combination of combinations, each gross offense will be committed. Like this, it was said in the case of taking what is not given, but because there is no distinction, it is applied universally. The saying, "To do to what has been done halfway is half itself," here, the word "half" in "to what has been done halfway" is a part, meaning that the act of initiating the work that causes all downfalls, to do to what has been done halfway, means to complete the remaining part. To complete the remaining part is half, that is, the completion of that act is half done. This explanation means that for what has been done halfway, to complete the remaining half, from the beginning to the end, whatever arises that is called the essence of the offense, in the next stage, it should be confessed. For example, if an old cloth that has been slightly washed, boiled, or kneaded is entrusted to a non-relative Bhikshuni to wash, boil, or knead, it constitutes a minor offense. Also, if a mat is made from old silk or old black sheep's wool, it constitutes a minor offense. Also, if sheep's wool that has been slightly washed, boiled, or combed is entrusted to a non-relative Bhikshuni to wash, boil, or comb, it constitutes a minor offense. The saying, "A part of an offense is an offense," means that from the fundamental offenses such as Parajika, a part of the offense of gross offenses such as Sanghavasesa is the offense itself, that is, the one who commits the offense. For example, being accused by those who have committed gross offenses, offenses of downfall, offenses to be confessed separately, and minor offenses constitutes a minor offense. If accused by those who have committed the three unpardonable sins, namely killing one's father, killing one's mother, and killing an Arhat, it constitutes a Sanghavasesa.
