It is said: It should be connected to "eating." No matter how much garlic is eaten, it will constitute a downfall. There is no downfall for eating due to illness. Eating garlic and leeks constitutes a misdeed. The downfall of "relying on odors not permitted by the Sangha" has been explained. Now, starting from here, the three downfalls caused by "impure things" will be explained. Among them, regarding the situation where "not wearing a menstrual cloth" will constitute a downfall, therefore it is said "not wearing a menstrual cloth." During menstruation, not wearing a poor quality cloth called "menstrual cloth" at the opening of the uterus will constitute this offense. Wearing a menstrual cloth is to avoid wearing underwear and other clothing, and to avoid being unsightly due to blood stains. The so-called "impure thing" refers to the fact that lay people or other monastics perceive unclean clothing. The so-called "tie it with a rope and place it" means that the menstrual cloth should be tied around the waist with a rope and placed at the opening of the uterus. The so-called "should be washed and changed frequently" refers to that menstrual cloth. The quotations from these two sutras come from the *Vinayavastu*, therefore, bhikkhunis should not wear menstrual cloths in that way, but should tie them around their waists with a rope and sew them there. The sutra says: "It should be washed and changed frequently." Regarding the situation where "not wearing a bathing cloth" will constitute a downfall, therefore it is said "bathing cloth also." It should be connected to "not wearing." When the body becomes wet due to bathing or rain, not wearing a bathing cloth, not wearing clothes that cover the body, will constitute this offense. Not covering the area from below the pubic hair to above the knees is the root offense. Not covering other parts of the body from below the neck to above the ankles constitutes a misdeed. This is because many bhikkhunis bathe with lay women in rivers and other places, and when they bathe, the women point and say that so-and-so bhikkhuni's breasts are like this, so-and-so's belly is like a gourd, so-and-so's waist is thick, so-and-so's thighs are

I, named Great Nose, am established from the basis of many statements regarding the limbs of the body and the secret parts, etc. From this, it should be known that it is a fault not to cover the upper body. Therefore, the great cloth garment of summer was not spoken to the nuns, but this alone is sufficient. The so-called "those two should be cut off" means that having the wound-covering cloth and the rain cloth, these two should be cut off. In what circumstances does causing a laundryman to wash clothes constitute a downfall? Therefore, it is said, "causing a laundryman to wash clothes." That is, causing a laundryman to wash one's own blessed old clothes that should be washed, such as Dharma robes and cushions, constitutes a fault here. The detailed distinction here should be understood from following the subsequent "downfall of causing washing to soak." The origin here is that twelve groups of nuns saw harm in a dream, and their clothes became soiled, so they had the laundryman wash them. The laundryman took them and washed them together with the clothes of householders, and those virtuous ones said that the white clothes of the householders became unpleasant due to impurity, and neither the householders nor the renunciates were pleased, and from this it was established. Even if only a part is washed, it is considered washed. The so-called "doing is the same as causing to do," and "until the end of the result is the same," these previously explained contents should also be understood in the same way here. There is no fault in causing washing that has been soiled by feces, dirt, mud, etc. Whether the clothes are turned inside out or not, causing other menders to turn them inside out should be understood as a misdeed from the perspective of how it was obtained. The three downfalls arising from transgression, namely the downfall of not wearing a wound-covering cloth, the downfall of not wearing a rain cloth, and the downfall of causing a laundryman to wash clothes, have been explained. In what circumstances does disrespecting the banner of Dharma constitute a downfall? Therefore, it is said, "giving alms in order to have the clothes of a renunciate worn by a householder." That is, giving and bestowing the clothes of a renunciate, such as rag robes and robes, to a householder to wear.
