We have committed transgressions, but it is not that we have not committed transgressions; we have been expelled from the Sangha, but it is not that we have not been expelled from the Sangha. Because whoever has been expelled from the Sangha should not be established in a way that is not in accordance with the Dharma, so I thought. That which is called "not being able to abide" means that even if one has requested harmony and has already obtained harmony, one cannot naturally abide until one has requested a harmonious Uposatha from the Sangha and has not obtained a harmonious Uposatha. This means that one is not entitled to both Dharma and material possessions. The term "harmonious Uposatha" refers to a statement that is in accordance with the meaning, and it is a term for performing the Uposatha for the purpose of achieving harmony. That which is called "doing after giving" means that the harmonious Uposatha should not be done in that way, but should be done only after giving it. That which is called "that is the action" means that the giving of the harmonious Uposatha is given by them after requesting it, and by the Sangha with the action of requesting and the four karmas. The mantra of their request is: "Venerable Sangha, please listen! Because the Sangha has performed the act of expulsion on the monk of Kausambi, I have come before the Sangha. If I ask for forgiveness, the Sangha will perform the act of forgiveness for me. I have performed the act of forgiveness, and together with my retinue, I have come before the Sangha.
