Even taking just a single mouthful or so is a waste of what should be given in faith. Having already been satisfied, to subsist on leftover food, even eating just a single mouthful or so, is a waste of what should be given in faith. This is taught as follows: Having deliberately taken from perfect view, giving to those whose view is deteriorated; having deliberately taken from perfect morality, giving to those who are immoral; having already been satisfied, subsisting as desired on leftover food, even taking just a single mouthful or so; having already been satisfied, subsisting as desired on leftover food, even eating just a single mouthful or so of food, is a waste of what should be given in faith. Merely for the sake of sustaining the body, these are not considered wasteful. If it exceeds what is needed to sustain the body, even by just a single mouthful, then it becomes wasteful. For parents, the sick, those who wish to renounce, pregnant women, and those who desire to be tamed touching alms, and when laypeople come, a share should be divided from it, giving to them, this is not considered a waste of faithful offerings. "Touching alms out of desire" means if a layperson, desiring alms, touches the alms of a monk with their hand. "Laypeople coming" means those who come unexpectedly during mealtime. These are just examples; it is the same for siblings and other relatives. One should place a mouthful of food without discrimination, meaning that at the beginning of a meal, one should dedicate a mouthful of food to all sentient beings without specifying anyone. Here, the text says that one should place a mouthful of food that has not been touched in any way. One should also give to animals, referring to placing that one mouthful of food. Here, the text says that after a monk has eaten, he should not fail to leave a mouthful of food for animals. Food set aside for one's own consumption should not be given away before one has finished eating, meaning that for food set aside for one's own consumption, one should not give it to those who eat leftovers, etc., before one has finished eating.
