To be eaten. After eating, garlic for seven days, rapeseed for three days, and chives for less than one day, one should not enter the temple. This means that a patient who has eaten garlic, etc., in a secluded place should not enter the temple. Not only should one not enter immediately after eating, but one should not enter the temple if seven days have not passed since eating garlic. One should not enter if three days have not passed since eating rapeseed. One should not enter if one day has not passed since eating chives. Not to be used as a dwelling place, means to enjoy. Not to enter the place of teaching, means for the Sangha. Not to be in the place of urination, also means to enter the Sangha. Not to go into the Sangha, also means because the patient has eaten garlic, etc. Not to be around the stupa, means not to walk around the stupa. The distance is one fathom, which refers to the surroundings of the stupa. Here, the scripture means that one fathom around the stupa should be avoided, because monks, the stupa is filled with those who have visible faith, and the gods like cleanliness, so the smell is incompatible with them. One should not teach the Dharma to laypeople, also because the patient has eaten garlic, etc. One should not enter houses, which refers to the houses of laypeople. One should not be in crowded places, which means one should not walk in crowded places either. Finally, one should bathe, which means that after the patient has relied on garlic, etc., to accomplish what is needed, one should bathe at the end. The smell of the clothes, I will remove by washing and burning, which means that when the patient relies on garlic, etc., the smell that adheres to the clothes should be removed by these two methods. Volume 57. To bless as suitable, the cooked and the dwelling are similar to the outside, which means, for example, the dwelling of a monk, from the surroundings including one fathom to any place that has become outside, such as gardens and rural monasteries, where cooking food and carrying etc.

Just as being cooked inside and being stained by the fault of oiliness inside will not stain, similarly, inside a monastery, if a suitable house that has been blessed as suitable is made, those faults will not occur there either. In order to show that a suitable house is suitable to be blessed, it is said that "it should be blessed," and it is connected to the term "suitable house." It is said that it should not be done near trees, elephant stables, the dwellings of non-Buddhists, the ground of the king's palace, the summer retreat of nuns, the walls of monasteries, gatehouses, corridors, heating areas, and the enclosures of measuring places. This is connected to the phrase "blessing a suitable house." Because it is said that a suitable house should not be blessed near trees and so on, it is in order to completely avoid the violent, the mad, and those who are oppressive. Some texts say that it is also not allowed in places without coverings, fire rooms, the foundations of stupas, and the residences of householders. Some texts say that in those places also, a suitable house should not be blessed. In these and the previously mentioned places, a suitable house should not be blessed. Now, cooking and boiling are also not allowed, and this refers to places near trees and so on, and places without coverings. Here, "cooking" refers to cooking rice. It should be understood that "boiling" refers to anything other than that. If a monk does not avoid others in those two places, he should not allow others to do it either, let alone do it himself, because it is forbidden from the beginning. Therefore, a monk should not allow others to cook and boil near trees and so on, and in places without coverings and so on, because it is improper and will cause others to be contemptuous and disrespectful. One should also not clean up food, and this refers to not cleaning up after food has been cooked near trees and so on, and in places without coverings and so on. "Cooked" means that non-thin things are cooked when they are reduced to one-third. For thin things, it is cooked when the color changes. For liquids, it is cooked when it has boiled twice. The monk himself should not clean up those cooked things in those places.
