It is a summary. In order to be free from the craving for alcohol, one should drink a mixture of water infused with the aroma of alcohol and powdered dry medicine made from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits. This means: If there is a craving for alcohol, in order to separate from it, one should drink water mixed with powdered dry medicine made from roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits that can be used as ingredients for alcohol, infused with the vapor of alcohol. This is called a beverage mixed with powder. Here, the scripture says: Therefore, whatever dry substances such as roots and stems that can be used as ingredients for alcohol, should be made into powder, wrapped in white cloth, and kept in a container that is not full and free from the aroma of alcohol. Then, it is allowed to take it out, clean it, mix it with water that is not contaminated with food, filter it, and drink it. And so on, it is said. If it is said that it should be infused with the aroma of alcohol, how should it be infused? Therefore, it is said that it should be infused by hanging it in a container with alcohol. This means that the bag of medicinal powder should be hung in a container with alcohol, without touching the alcohol, in order to infuse it. Guarding against contact means: In order to prevent the bag of powder from coming into contact with the alcohol, it must be guarded. Therefore, it should be placed in a container that is not full and free from the aroma of alcohol, which means: Because contact must be guarded, it should be hung in a container that is not full of alcohol, that is, a container free from the aroma of alcohol. Otherwise, pouring upwards will cause contact. Similarly, for making the taste disappear and drinking at the wrong time, it is also the same as with food (guarding against contact), which means: Just as contact between the powder and alcohol must be guarded, similarly, contact with substances that make the taste of the drink disappear, and contact with food when drinking at the wrong time, must also be guarded. Beauty is also good, which means: The mixture of dry powder and water infused with the aroma of alcohol, guarding it in that way from contact with food, is beautiful and good. Therefore, it should be filtered with white cloth, which means: Because beauty is good, therefore,

Therefore, it should be filtered with white muslin. This statement that the patient should not drink alcohol, even with a blade of grass, refers to the fact that all prescribed faults are allowed for the sake of the patient, which is to show a special exception. Just as the Blessed One said that it was not allowed for those who had become Shakya. Likewise, the Blessed One said, 'If any bhikshu claims to be my teacher, you should not drink alcohol, not even with a blade of grass.' The statement that all up to the layperson should not feed it means that all those who have not taken vows in this Dharma, up to the level of layperson, should not feed alcohol. Here, the text refers to the six activities that a layperson should not do: selling sentient beings, selling weapons, selling alcohol, selling poison, operating a brothel, and extracting sesame oil. The statement that everything other than naturally blameworthy actions is solely for the purpose of healing refers to the remainder. The statement that all prescribed faults are prohibited, but not for the purpose of healing, means that there is no prohibition for that purpose. The remainder refers to the prohibition of intoxicating drinks, which should be understood as prohibited even for the purpose of healing. There is no downfall in indulging in prescribed faults for the very purpose of healing the patient. For example, if one knows that meat has been offered in sacrifice, one should not eat it, and so on. All violations of prescribed faults are solely for the purpose of healing. The remainder refers to the exception of the downfall of intoxication, because it is the gateway to all sins, so there is no exception to it. Here, the text asks, 'How should a monk serve a sick person?' The attendant should do everything possible to heal the patient, except for naturally blameworthy actions. Therefore, the Blessed One said that a monk should not eat garlic, and so on. One should not eat garlic, leeks, or onions, whether cooked or uncooked. The patient should be in a secluded place, referring to garlic, and so on.
