"The meaning of 'Should ask, is it (what)?'" is that when renunciants receive donated meat, the eater should ask: 'Is this meat that a monk should not eat, such as human meat, tiger's testicles, elephant, horse, dragon, single-hoofed animal, etc.?' If it doesn't come from these, it can be eaten. This sentence is just an example. If you ask, 'What kind of meat is this?', even if you don't mention others, there is no fault. 'If there are many, the first (asks)' means that if there are multiple eaters, the first person should ask. If many monks gather, the elder of the Sangha should ask, this is a summary statement. 'If neglected, the next (asks)' means to combine the occasion of meat to ask. If the first person neglects to ask, the monk behind him should ask. 'Elephant and human milk should not be taken orally' means that renunciants should not drink the milk of female elephants and women. 'Applying to the skin and wounds, dripping into the nostrils and eyeliner, not eating, there is no fault' means to combine unsuitable meat and milk, etc. to say. Applying them to the skin, wounds, dripping into the nostrils, drawing eyeliner, not eating, there is no fault, this is a summary statement. Here, the scripture says: Bhikshus, those that are not suitable as medicine, and boiled oil, can they be eaten? Cannot be approached. Body smearing and wound massage, and the act of dripping into the nostrils, there is no downfall. Can a monk eat a woman's milk? Cannot be approached. Applying to the eyes has no downfall, it is said. 'The sick should drink ghee and oil mixed with alcohol' means that the sick should drink ghee and oil mixed with alcohol. Here, the scripture says: Bhikshus, if ghee and oil are temporarily mixed with alcohol, can they be eaten? Can be approached, but this is for the sick, not for the healthy, it is said. 'If it is not alcohol, there is no fault' means that if alcohol becomes something that is not alcohol, there is no fault for everyone.

It changes. Here, the term "not alcohol" indicates that its smell and taste are both gone. If it is said that "the tasting of smell and taste does not intoxicate," then it should be known. The term "that which is accomplished by boiling" means that which is not alcohol, and by boiling, even alcohol becomes not alcohol. Here, the scripture says, if a monk commits an offense by being intoxicated, is it permissible to drink it after boiling it with fire? Is it permissible to be near it? That is what is said. The term "that which is sown with roasted barley and placed in the ground becomes salt" means that if malt is put into alcohol and placed in the ground together with the container, it will become salt. The term "grape juice does not become alcohol when boiled" means that if freshly squeezed grape juice is boiled immediately, it will not become alcohol even if it is left for a long time; it is warm. Here, the scripture says that it should be boiled and left, and it will become a beverage that is not for the monastic community's time. The term "that which is not different is not existent" means that, for example, sesame and sesame oil are not different, and sugarcane and juice are not different. Therefore, sesame oil does not exist in sesame, and sugarcane juice does not exist in sugarcane. Therefore, giving or receiving sesame is not the same as giving or receiving sesame oil, and giving or receiving sugarcane is not the same as giving or receiving sugarcane juice, it should be known. This is what is shown: if a monk gives or receives sesame and then extracts oil, then that sesame oil must be given or received. If sugarcane is given or received and then juice is extracted, then that juice must be given or received. Therefore, sesame and sugarcane that have been given or received can be eaten, but sesame oil and juice that have been extracted and pressed cannot be eaten unless they have been given or received. The term "that which has become a habit is existent" means that that which has become a habit is existent. Here, the scripture says, is it permissible or not permissible for monks to eat the residue of boiled butter and other things that are not permissible to eat? The answer is: it is permissible for the sick to eat, but not permissible for the non-sick. When asked if it is the same with meat, the answer is: things that are not suitable and things that are impure should not be eaten.
