What is there then? Therefore, if these three are truly performed with steadfast extension, then there is no fault in repeatedly eating, gathering and eating, entering the village without informing, and begging for clothes, and he shares the benefits with the rest, so it is said. Regarding the phrase "these three as they are," "these three" refers to holding, separating, and placing. Regarding "as they are," it refers to the fact that previously, in the context of abandoning offenses, the sutra said, "These three do not occur in steadfast extension," therefore, for steadfast extension, there is no fault in these three of holding, separating, and placing, as it is shown. Similarly, after steadfast extension, there is no fault in repeatedly eating, gathering and eating, entering the village without informing, and begging for clothes, and the five benefits of the steadfastly extended bhikshu sharing the benefits with the other steadfastly extended bhikshus are also present. Regarding the phrase "he shares the benefits with the rest," "he" refers to the steadfastly extended bhikshu, and as long as he does not cancel the steadfast extension, even if he lives in another place, he shares the benefits related to the steadfast extension with the other steadfastly extended bhikshus. There are ten benefits of steadfast extension, among which holding, separating, and placing, repeatedly eating, gathering and eating, entering the village without informing, and begging for clothes without fault, and sharing the benefits with the rest of the bhikshus, these eight benefits are directly shown as such. The lower garment, the upper garment, and the Dharma garment that includes them, whoever wears them while wandering, and holding as much unpermitted clothing as one desires, these two final benefits are not explicitly included in this sutra, because previously, in the context of showing the abandonment rituals of holding, separating, and placing, these three have already been shown, so they have already been included. What should be done? Here, in order to completely avoid the fault of separation, one should carry the sanghati even when wandering, and in order to completely avoid the fault of holding and placing.

Since it is to make the clothes suitable, then, for whoever has laid out the hard mat, there is no fault of separation. Therefore, there is no need to apply patches, what is the use of that? Similarly, for him, there is no fault of holding and placing. Therefore, there is no need to make the clothes suitable, what is the use of that? Thus, merely showing the previous three already includes those two. If it is said that even without the fault of separation, one carries the Dharma robes including the upper and lower garments and travels around, then why not respectfully apply patches? That is not the case, carrying the Dharma robes including the upper and lower garments is to cover the shameful parts, and to truly protect the marks of ordination, therefore there is no need to apply patches. The Blessed One separately said to carry the Dharma robes including the upper and lower garments and travel around, in order to show the benefit of being freed from the burden of carrying patches. Separately saying to hold untreated clothes is to show the benefit of being freed from the affairs of treatment, and the bliss of extreme taming. If it is said "one should lay out the hard mat", then who should lay it out? In order to show this from the opposite side, it is said that for those who have not vowed to stay in retreat, whose retreat is broken, who have vowed to stay in the late summer retreat, and who have vowed to stay in retreat elsewhere, this will not happen. They will not lay out the hard mat, and there is no benefit of the hard mat. The two cases of not vowing to stay in retreat and the retreat being broken do not have a complete Sangha, because the former has not vowed to stay in retreat, and the latter is because it is broken. For those who have vowed to stay in retreat elsewhere, this will also not happen, because there is no summer Sangha together with the Sangha belonging to laying out the hard mat. Therefore, for those who have not vowed to stay in retreat, whose retreat is broken, and who have vowed to stay in retreat elsewhere, the laying out of the hard mat will not happen for the time being, because laying out the hard mat is the actual ritual.

This is because it depends on this. The commitment to reside in the later summer retreat is not part of the actual ceremony, because when all the Sangha members commit to residing in the earlier summer retreat, it goes beyond the Sangha's regulations. When committing to reside in the later summer retreat, there are no summer retreatants gathered with the Sangha, so for them, the firm spreading of the seat will not occur. It also applies to those residing in other places, connecting with "the firm spreading of the seat will not occur." Those residing in other places refer to those who are cut off by precepts, those who move, and so on. These individuals are different from those who naturally reside as monks, so for them, the firm spreading of the seat will not occur. Although it has been said that the firm spreading of the seat will not occur for novices and others, they are not mentioned here because they are not involved in activities, so even if they are not mentioned, it is established. If they themselves obtain it, it will not occur, meaning that those residing in other places obtaining it themselves means they themselves obtain it. If they themselves obtain it, the firm spreading of the seat will not occur for them. Those other than the last, those residing in other places, and novices are entitled to benefits, meaning that those who did not commit to the summer retreat earlier, those whose summer retreat was broken, those who committed to the later summer retreat, and those who committed to residing in other places, having said these four terms, except for the last one who committed to residing in other places, the remaining three, those residing in other places, and novices, although they cannot obtain the benefits of the firm spreading of the seat, they are entitled to a share of the benefits of the firm spreading of the seat, because they are the same in meaning as the summer retreatants, so it should not be refuted. Having mentioned those residing in other places, it may lead to those expelled from the Sangha also being entitled to benefits. To eliminate this, it is said that those expelled from the Sangha are not entitled to benefits, because those expelled from the Sangha have become separate from the Sangha, so it should be known that they are not entitled to the benefits of the firm spreading of the seat. Those cut off by precepts and those who move, etc., are the Sang
