After taking the counting sticks, promise to stay here tomorrow morning. This is clear, it is said. In late summer, if you want to observe the retreat, specify it with a mantra on the fifteenth day of the last summer month. Immediately after making that request, distribute the counting sticks, meaning: immediately after performing the ritual of making the request in that way, distribute the counting sticks. First, take the Teacher's counting stick, meaning: when distributing the counting sticks, distribute the counting sticks first, so take the counting stick of the Teacher, the Buddha Shakyamuni. Others should rise halfway from their seats, meaning: other than taking the Teacher's counting stick, the other monks should take their respective counting sticks with the deportment of rising halfway from their seats. The novice monks' counting sticks should be taken by their preceptors and mentors, meaning: starting from the Teacher, after all the senior monks have been distributed the counting sticks, the distributor of the counting sticks starts again from the beginning, and for the monks who have novice disciples and attendants, let them (the novices) take the novice's counting sticks, and for the preceptors and mentors who have novice disciples or attendants, their counting sticks should be taken by the preceptors and mentors. Finally, the counting sticks of the permanent residents should also be taken, meaning: after the counting sticks of the novice monks have been distributed in that way, finally the guardian deities of the monastery, the permanent residents, such as the great goddess Robber Mother, etc., should also be distributed counting sticks. They should be placed slowly, meaning: when collecting the counting sticks, everyone should place them slowly. After counting, know that this many monks have taken counting sticks here, meaning: after collecting the counting sticks, after counting how many there are, tell the total number to the Sangha, say it like that, understand it like that. The foundation for dwelling should be laid, meaning: the foundation for dwelling is the foundation for dwelling, that is, the dwelling place, etc. Because the dwelling place is stable, it should be offered to the Sangha. Take away the bolts and keys of those, sit in front and say: Venerable, please accept such and such great monastery together with the gains and the value of the cloth.

What is meant by "generating faith and entrusting acceptance according to the qualities" is that any monastic who is able to allocate dwellings, if they wish to establish a place for the summer retreat, then all the locks and keys of those places should be collected at that time, and the monastic who gathers and distributes should first sit before the permanent residents of the Sangha and begin to generate faith by stating the qualities of those places as they are, so as to entrust acceptance. That is, to entrust acceptance, for example, "Such and such a permanent monastery has gains and the value of robes, if you wish, please take it." Similarly, in order of seniority, the remaining places should also be stated as they are, generating faith and entrusting acceptance. Whichever monastic takes whichever place, the locks and keys of that place should also be given to him. What is meant by "taking, etc., is similar to a begging bowl" is that, as it is said, when distributing ownerless begging bowls, "If you want, please take it," and "If there is an interval in between, the one who has taken it cannot reclaim it," and "It is not given the second time, but given the third time," as shown, here too, when allocating places, all of those should be applied as before. What is meant by "if it is known that they have left for reasons other than for stupas and the Sangha, then they should be allocated from the remaining shares" is that if a monastic has left on their own accord for personal matters, not for the sake of stupas or the Sangha, then if there is a remaining share of places, it should be allocated from there. Here, "remaining" refers to the remainder that can be allocated again to the permanent monastics after the allocation has already been completed. If there is such a remainder, it should be allocated. If they have left for the sake of stupas and the Sangha, then the shares should be allocated according to seniority. Here, the text is: The Blessed One said in the context of the permanent resident Nede: "Whoever has left for the work of the Sangha or stupas should be allocated dwellings according to seniority. For others, it should be according to the remaining shares." The roots of trees and
