Now, obtaining means obtaining the dwelling itself. Not obtaining refers to any sick person who, due to old age and weakness, resides in a room but has not previously obtained a dwelling. Even if the sick person has not previously obtained a room, one should not refrain from giving them a new room, but should only give. Here, the scripture states: "Monks, do not assign the dwelling of a sick monk to others. If you do, it will become a serious offense." Therefore, for a sick monk, one should avoid providing a dwelling, avoid providing attendants, and avoid assigning work, as it is said. Here, the term "sick person" should be understood as someone who cannot endure suffering. "Do not let him do those services and work" means do not let that sick person do the work of caring for the illness. A leper should not use the monastic dwelling, meaning he should not use the monastic dwelling and bedding, etc. "Give him a secluded dwelling" means give that leper a remote and secluded dwelling. A leper should not reside in places frequented by the monastic community, including under eaves, in square houses, at doorways, on staircases, in houses, and under trees. A leper should not enter the places for urination and defecation, meaning a leper should not enter these two places of the monastic community. "One should care for him by assigning attendants" means the monks who have become part of the monastic community should care for that leper by assigning attendants, because that leper has a long-term and serious illness, and because the Dharma is characterized by great compassion. Here, the scripture states: "A monk with leprosy should not use the monastic dwelling and bedding. He should not reside in places such as under eaves. He should not enter the places for urination and defecation of the monastic community. The monastic community should give him a dwelling in a secluded place, and also provide attendants," as it is said. At all times, dwellings should be assigned to monks living in solitary places, because they have alms bowls and robes, etc.

In order to place items such as alms bowls, residences should be designated in the monastery. Here, the root is that when monastic communities arrive at the monastery and obtain residences, some monks do not receive them. Therefore, the Blessed One instructed: Residences should be designated in the monastery for the people of the monastic community to place their alms bowls and Dharma robes. If someone vows to observe the summer retreat, some may suddenly arrive, so lodging and bedding should be prepared. Mentioning vowing to observe the summer retreat indicates that it is not for all times. If it is known that monks who have vowed to observe the summer retreat, whether they arrive early or late, will suddenly arrive, then the foundation of the lodging and bedding such as beds should be prepared. If many arrive, the abbot should designate first. If many suddenly arriving monks arrive, those who have previously vowed to observe the summer retreat should designate the lodging first. Those who vowed to observe the summer retreat later should not designate further.

When arranging dwellings in order, a Brahmin came to the monastery, and when he saw it, he thought: Who would not have faith in these virtuous Shakya's son practitioners who distribute in this way? So faith arose. He had a monastery built, and the monks offered it to the Sangha. The monks said: It's too damp, we don't accept it. He had bricks laid and offered it. The monks said: It's too remote and desolate, we don't accept it. That Brahmin knew that they didn't accept it because they wanted to get more, so that Brahmin began to slander, saying: The Shakya's son practitioners accept the monastery because they want to get something. At this time, the Blessed One taught: Monks should not accept monasteries out of greed for gain, but should accept monasteries out of compassion for the donors. They should also accept with a non-deficient mind. It should all be used, which means that even if one person does not get many dwellings. How can one person use it all? Therefore, some should be used for reading, some for recitation, some for dwelling, and some for resting. Some should be used for placing bowls and robes, and some for sleeping at night. Some should be used for dwelling in the morning, noon, and evening, and should be arranged in this way. The method should be arranged in this way so that it can all be used. Some sutras say: Some should be used for reading, some for recitation, some for placing bowls and robes, and some for sleeping. Some sutras say: Some should be used for dwelling in the morning, some for eating at noon, some for dwelling in the afternoon, and some for dwelling at night. Therefore, in order to summarize these two statements, this sutra was spoken. After vowing to abide, the foundation of the dwelling should be repaired so that it is not broken or cracked, which means that after a monk vows to abide, the foundation of the dwelling should be repaired so that it is not broken or cracked. Broken means one side is broken. Cracked means cracked. When nuns abide, they should repair the summer retreat house.
