The matter is as follows: The Gekö (overseer of monks) needs to examine and understand the dates from the residence of the Sangha. Then, every day, he should say to the Sangha, 'Today is the [number] day.' The meaning of 'specifically' is that one should not say 'specific date,' but rather 'specifically indicate the date.' If asked, 'What is used to specifically indicate it?' Therefore, it is said, 'By the division of the month,' which means to specifically indicate the date by the division of the waxing and waning moon. 'For the patrons and deities of the monastery, the words to encourage the monks to recite verses' means that the Gekö should encourage the monks to recite verses for the sake of the patrons and deities of the monastery. If asked, 'When should they be encouraged?' Therefore, it is said, 'At the time of announcing the date.' If asked, 'How should they be encouraged?' Therefore, it is said, 'Today is the first day of the waxing moon; for the sake of the patrons and deities of the monastery, please recite one verse each.' That is to say, the date should be announced using the division of the waxing and waning moon, and the verses should also be recited. 'The patrons of the monastery should also say the words of invitation,' which means that the patrons of the monastery should also say the words of invitation for the Sangha's meals and so on. The Gekö should say this to the Sangha once a day during the daily duties. If asked, 'How should it be said?' Therefore, it is said, 'If the patron, so-and-so, invites the Sangha for a meal, then please, venerable ones, each of you kindly accept with a virtuous mind.' 'It should not be limited to one day,' which means that for the waxing and waning moon, one day should not be taken as fifteen days. If asked, 'When is that?' Therefore, it is said, 'The months of the seasons themselves are arranged in this way,' which means that the six seasons—winter, late winter, spring, early summer, summer, and autumn—each have two months. The two months from the minor waning of the last autumn month to the full moon of the middle winter month are the winter season. From the full moon of the middle winter month to the spring month
