If one does not steal by other means such as enticing with land, then at what time it becomes apparent, at that time it should be known as stealing. If one steals a bird, how is it determined to be stealing? Therefore, it is said, "If that is the case, when the bird takes flight." "If that is the case" means, if one steals after the bird takes flight. At that time, when the bird takes flight, it is indeed stealing. Here, the scripture says that if a monk lets a bird take flight and then steals it, then when the bird takes flight, the value of the bird should be calculated. "Taking flight and then stealing" here is synonymous with "letting fly and then stealing." All taking flight is going to another direction, because flying is the nature of going to the sky. Here, mentioning the bird is just an example; all objects, if they go to another direction in the sky, it is stealing, because the sky is another direction. How is it determined that a tethered (animal) is stolen? Therefore, it is said, "A tethered domestic animal, when it is untied." Stealing a tethered domestic animal is stealing when it is untied. This includes that if a monk takes out a deer that has fallen into a swamp, the value of the deer should be calculated. If a monk takes out a fish caught in a fish trap, the value of the fish should be calculated. If one wants to steal a domestic animal by tethering it or separating it from the herd, how is it determined to be stealing? Therefore, it is said, "Tethering and separating from the herd, it is when it becomes invisible." "Tethering" refers to tethering some cattle, sheep, etc. to a stake when walking in a herd. "Separating from the herd" means separating from the herd's location and leaving. If one wants to steal a domestic animal by tethering it or separating it from the herd, then how is it considered stealing? It is stealing when it becomes invisible, but merely moving it from its location is not stealing. If the owner and the herdsman are following closely behind, then at that time, it is when it becomes invisible from the owner and the herdsman. If the owner and the herdsman are nearby, then at that time, it is when it becomes invisible from them. If the owner and the herdsman are not there, then at that time, it is when it becomes invisible from the herd.
