The Extensive Commentary on the Vinaya Sutra The Extensive Commentary on the Vinaya Sutra In Sanskrit: Vinaya Sutra Tika. In Tibetan: The Extensive Commentary on the Vinaya Sutra. Volume One. Homage to the Three Jewels! Having attained the depths and the far shore of the ocean of Vinaya, Possessing the complete view of all causes, free from defilement, I pay homage to the supreme of all guides in the world, And will explain the very essence of the Vinaya Sutra. Taking the discipline of definite emergence as the main subject, this first sutra states the explanation of the Vinaya Sutra, the subject matter, the purpose, and the purpose of the purpose. Because, if one prematurely assumes that these are unrelated, without subject matter, and without purpose, then one would not accept these words, let alone other treatises and so on. Therefore, in order to dispel the doubt that this Vinaya Sutra has no subject matter, the subject matter is explained. In order to dispel the doubt of being fruitless, the purpose is stated. In order to dispel the doubt of having no means, the connection is explained. In order to accomplish the desired meaning, the purpose of the purpose is shown. Thus, this shows the four, some are obvious, and some are implied. Among these, the subject matter here is the discipline of this school, discipline is discipline. Therefore, saying the word "discipline" is to explain the subject matter. The purpose here is to explain the discipline spoken by the Blessed One, and this sutra speaks of this. Therefore, this sutra is the means, and explaining the discipline is what arises from the means. The nature of the means and what arises from the means is the connection. The connection is mentioned indirectly, thus, when composing this sutra in order to understand the discipline, it is actually said that the sutra itself is the means. Because it is impossible to enter without means, therefore the connection is actually shown. Thus, here the meaning of the words arises, that here discipline is the subject matter, and explaining discipline is the purpose, because this Vinaya Sutra will explain discipline, so the Vinaya

This is the method for that purpose. Thus, the Vinaya Sutra and the purpose are related by the nature of method and what arises from the method, which is a synonym for the nature of cause and effect. Therefore, this sutra is composed for the purpose of fully understanding the meaning of discipline. If someone objects, saying, "What is the use of fully understanding discipline? It is like examining the teeth of a crow, which is of no use at all." Therefore, the purpose of the purpose should be explained, which is revealed by the term "definite emergence." Definite emergence is Nirvana. In the teachings of the Blessed One, this discipline is taught for the sake of definite emergence, so by fully purifying discipline, one will truly attain Nirvana. If asked, "If it is wisdom that destroys the afflictions, how can one truly attain it through discipline?" It is true, but relying on discipline, wisdom will be able to abandon the afflictions. Therefore, it is also said in the sutras, "Abiding in discipline, relying on discipline, one will truly see the four noble truths as they are." If it is said, "The purpose here is to explain discipline." However, treatises such as the Differentiation have already explained discipline, so there is no need to compose this sutra. This is not so, although other treatises have explained it, the master composed this treatise for the sake of those who are afraid of listening to extensive treatises, and in order to truly explain the Differentiation and other treatises, and to eliminate the inverted explanations of other treatises. Thus, the meaning to be explained and the purpose of the purpose are clearly revealed in order by the two words discipline and definite emergence, while the connection and purpose are revealed implicitly, because this sutra is composed for the purpose of explaining discipline. The phrase "to be undertaken" shows up to the undertaking of the discipline of definite emergence, which is the general meaning for the time being. The meaning of the branches should also be explained, the discipline of definite emergence.
