Or stealing, or instigating stealing, or sending to steal, will also become a sin. It is not held by the continuum of non-humans, because it is said, "It is held by the continuum of other sentient beings, it is a downfall." If one steals an object held by the continuum of humans with the perception that it is held by the continuum of other sentient beings, will it become the same sin? No. Therefore, it is said, "Recognizing there," meaning recognizing that it is held by the continuum of humans. If one recognizes that it is stealing from a person, then one will commit a Pārājika offense. Here, the scripture is like this: The bhikṣu thinks that these heavy utensils are held by others, women, or hermaphrodites, etc. It is said like this. Thus, this Pārājika offense of taking what is not given has five branches: the act of taking what is not given itself, five mashakas etc. itself, the intention to steal itself, the fact that it is held by the continuum of humans itself, and the recognition there itself. If any one of the branches is incomplete, one will not commit a Pārājika offense, but only a downfall offense. Having said "held by the continuum of humans," if an object carried by wind or other things, has it already been separated from ownership, or not? Therefore, it is said: When it is carried away, not abandoning this thought means that one has not separated from ownership. When wind and thieves etc. carry away clothes and other objects, if the owner does not abandon the thought of his own, then he has not separated from ownership of that object. Thus it is shown: Thus, even if thieves etc. take an object from the owner, as long as the owner does not abandon the thought of his own, then he has not separated from ownership of that object's scope. Here the scripture is: Thus, the clothes spread out by the washerman are blown away by the wind, and these clothes fall in the walking places of the bhikṣus, or in the fences, or in the doorways, and the bhikṣus handle them, moving them from one place to another, this is called stealing, and the value must be calculated.

It is said, "If fields and possessions are complete, there will be failure." The Blessed One said that if thieves are offered to the king's palace, it is the sin of inciting killing, but it is not said that it is the sin of inciting taking what is not given. If one abandons and severs the thought of possessing it, then because of being separated from the owner, at that time it will also be said to incite taking what is not given. If it is said, "possessed by humans," then what should be established if one steals something born of livestock belonging to an owner? Therefore, it is said that one who does not understand names and terms is the caretaker, the owner himself. One who understands names and terms is one who can speak worldly names and terms, and the property that belongs to it is one who understands names and terms. One who does not understand names and terms is one who cannot speak worldly names and terms, and the property that belongs to it is one who does not understand names and terms. For that property, the caretaker, the nurturer is the owner himself. Even for birds, it has ownership, because the property belongs to it. If both are owners, then the downfall is established according to the dominion of consciousness. Thus, here the treatise is, if someone thinks, where would there be ornaments for a bird stolen from a person? Then it is said to estimate the value, etc. If one steals livestock's food and fodder, is it also established in the same way? No. Therefore, it is said that what is given for food and drink is itself unrelated to thought. Whatever is given for food and drink that is born of livestock, such as food and fodder, it should be known that it is unrelated to the caretaker's thought. Thus it is taught that if one gives food and drink for livestock's food and fodder, there, the giver will think, "This is mine," and personally unite it by preventing separation. Because there is no thought of taking it back after uniting it, therefore, for it, the livestock itself is the owner, not the caretaker. The scriptural authority here is to estimate the value of the water that is the share of the livestock.
