Q: What actions lead to the downfall of taking what is not given? A: Therefore, it is said, "stealing or instigating theft." Stealing means doing it oneself, that is, a Bhikshu personally taking action to steal something. Instigating theft means entrusting and causing others to act, that is, entrusting someone and having them steal property. It is not limited to one's own body alone. How so? A: Through dispatching as well. Dispatching becomes the cause, and it is also stealing, that is, the dispatched person acts with their own body. Instigating theft is when the dispatched person entrusts another, saying, "Go and steal it yourself," or "Go and instigate others to steal it," causing them to do so. Due to the entrustment, such distinctions are made. There is no difference even if the dispatcher of the dispatched person steals; all of these will lead to downfall. In what circumstances does stealing, instigating theft, and dispatching become impure acts? Therefore, it is said, "not given." Because even given things can be taken with a stealing mind, it is specifically stated as "not given." Here, the scripture states that whether it is a woman, man, or hermaphrodite, any act of taking what is not given. What is the quantity? Therefore, it is said, "five mashakas and so on." If the amount of what is not given is about the quantity of five mashakas, that is five mashakas. What does "and so on" refer to? "And so on" refers to those things. Taking what is not given, and so on, stealing, instigating theft, and dispatching all become impure acts. By saying "and so on," it includes six, seven, eight, nine, ten, and so forth. Here, the scripture states, "five mashakas or more than five mashakas." With what kind of intention? Therefore, it is said, "with a stealing mind." Stealing or instigating theft with a stealing mind, as well as dispatching, all become impure acts. Like this, if it is with a deluded mind and so on, there will be no downfall, as will be explained later. Is it possessed by the continuum of non-humans? No, therefore it is said, "possessed by the continuum of humans." Whatever belongs to the realm of humans, that is the continuum of humans, possessed by it.
