Not one, but all the other elders as well. From "as well," it should be applied to subduing those who are untamed and unsatisfied. "To know completely" means that the abbot of the Sangha who is about to depart should know completely through the signs of his retinue's names, etc., meaning, "This is a person who belongs to my retinue, and I should also protect them." "To benefit them by teaching conduct and deportment, reciting scriptures, etc., as well as obtaining food and distributing to the sick," where "conduct" refers to the places of activity such as begging for alms. "Deportment" refers to deportment such as walking. "Teaching" refers to teaching these two, i.e., "This is a place of activity, this is not a place of activity, one should walk like this, one should not walk like this," etc. In "reciting scriptures, etc.," the word "etc." includes chanting, etc. "Obtaining food" refers to food and drink, etc. In "distributing to the sick, etc.," "distributing to the sick" refers to medicine and nursing, etc. The word "etc." includes the distribution of material goods such as robes. That is to say, the teaching of conduct and deportment, as well as reciting scriptures, etc., and obtaining food, as well as distributing to the sick, etc., these are precisely the things that should be done. "By accomplishing these" means by striving to do them. "To benefit them" means that the abbot of the Sangha should benefit those who are newly ordained. If someone vows to observe the summer retreat but does not clean the monastery, then persuade them, have them clean, and be pleased with those who clean. That is to say, the abbot who has vowed to observe the summer retreat should have them clean the monastery. Persuading those who do not clean the monastery to have them clean, this is what is said: If a bhikshu himself vows to observe the summer retreat but does not clean the monastery, then at that time the Sangha's abbot

Therefore, it was decided and happily agreed that the monks should clean the monastery in any case, and they were sent to clean. If they clean only by themselves, what should be done then? Therefore, it should be said, "One should happily clean," and praised, "This action is in accordance with the rules," to make them happy. One should benefit all who belong to the retinue and desire to converse by closely practicing the Dharma in accordance with them. That is to say, all elders should benefit the monks belonging to the retinue with the Dharma. "All" means all the elders, not just the elders who are in retreat. When? When those who belong to the retinue desire to converse, that is, if those monks desire to converse about the Sutras and Vinaya and other Dharmas and request it. At that time, all the elders of the Sangha should benefit them by closely practicing the Dharma in accordance with what is appropriate for them. Chapter Seven. Those who delight in silence should be left alone. The object of silence is silence itself. Those monks who delight in it should be left alone as they wish. Here, silence is understood as the noble silence, properly attending to it, not merely remaining silent. "Let the householder who has come near be put in charge of preparing food" means that if a householder comes to the monastery, let the householder who has come near be put in charge of preparing food. The elders of the Sangha should inform the monks, and if the monks do not prepare or the householder does not want food, then do not do it, or if they do not want it, speak to them words in accordance with the Dharma, saying, "We have this." That is, if the monks do not prepare food or the householder does not want to eat food, the elders of the Sangha should speak to those householders words in accordance with the Dharma, such as giving. After doing these things, the elders of the Sangha should make them very happy.
