For that reason, it is said, "Make crow's feet where necessary." This means that in order to keep the felt from changing, sew crow's feet amulets where necessary, that is, sew them in the shape of crow's feet. After showing the difference of completely protecting the bowl, now, in order to generate respect, it is said in general, "The bowl should be protected like the eyes," which means that just as the eyes must be protected from all harm, the bhikkhu must also protect the bowl in the same way. In order to generate great respect, the eyes are used as an example. It is said, "The robes should be like the skin," which means that just as the skin must be protected from wind, sun, rain, and so on, the bhikkhu must also protect the robes in the same way. It is said, "The remaining robes as well," which should be connected to "protecting like the skin." In passing, remembering, it is shown that the robes and so on must be completely protected. If the bowl and so on are used and become old, what should be done then? For that reason, it is said, "Repairs should be done well, do not discard them," the repairs of the bowl are sewing and burning, applying oil and wiping, and so on. The repairs of the robes are washing and sewing, changing the face, and so on. Do not discard those things that must be done, which means that there one must accept and take. Having said that repairs must be done, but not knowing what that is, how to do it, and where to do it, for that reason, from here on, those things must be said, saying, "One must diligently sew the bowl," which means that the bhikkhu must diligently sew the bowl, that is, one must do this. In order to eliminate the saying of manual labor, it is said, "In a quiet place," in order to show that the blacksmith's tools needed there are not provided by individuals, but must be according to the Dharma, it is said, "The Sangha must provide the blacksmith's tools," the Sangha must provide the blacksmith's tools, not by individuals. Having said, "One must diligently sew the bowl," it must be said with what to sew, first in order to show the prohibition of

Furthermore, materials for patching bowls, such as brown sugar and bamboo joints, as well as beeswax, camphor, and pigments, are said to be bad. They are bad because they are not suitable. It is taught thus: patching bowls with brown sugar and bamboo joints, as well as beeswax, camphor, and pigments, is not suitable because they are not strong. So what is good? Therefore, it is said that long iron strips, small iron nails, and patches like crocodile teeth are good. They are good because they are suitable. It is taught thus: patching bowls with brown sugar and bamboo joints, as well as beeswax, camphor, and pigments, is not suitable. Patching bowls with long iron strips, etc., is acceptable because they are strong. A patch for a bowl, a long strip made of iron is called a long iron strip. An iron nail for plugging holes, with a flat head, is called a small iron nail. An iron patch, made into a square or round or triangular shape, is called a patch. The edge of that patch, all like saw teeth, is called like crocodile teeth. Also with powder, this is said in conjunction with "like iron or stone." It is good to patch with iron or stone powder. This is a distinction made to connect with the following text. To adhere with oil and something ground fine like beeswax, this is to say that it is only with powder that one patches, and not with long iron strips, etc. Oil and powder ground together is called ground oil. To what extent should it be ground? Therefore, it is said, to the extent that it is like beeswax. That is to say, grind the powder to the extent that it is like beeswax. With what should it be ground? Therefore, it is said, with iron or corundum. Corundum is a type of stone. It is taught thus: mix oil and powder, grind with iron or corundum until it becomes like beeswax, that is the meaning to be said. Patch with something warm, that is, with a warm bowl, patch with ground powder. Cover with wheat bran, smear with mud, and bake just enough,
