Even contempt is related to that (bowl) itself. The meaning of "related to the bowl itself" is this. Even in summer, it is contemptuously related to the bowl, because similarity shows sameness. It is said that "the five are also the same," and the so-called "five also" refers to the three Dharma robes, the seat, and the water strainer. Just as contemptuously related to the bowl itself, the five are also the same, that is the meaning. The root here is, therefore, even with a contemptuous attitude towards these six items, one should properly abandon them. One cannot be without a bowl in summer, and the so-called "one cannot be without a bowl in summer" means that the one without a bowl is the one without a bowl, and one cannot be without a bowl in summer, that is the meaning. The so-called "should not wander and travel" means that one should not wander and travel without a bowl. The so-called "in the presence of fear, one should walk with a small bowl" refers to walking in the presence of fear, which means the path of fear. Its essence is fear itself. If it becomes fear itself, one should walk holding a small bowl. The root here is that the Blessed One taught: A monk should not wander and travel without a bowl. After being robbed by those who do not give, the Blessed One taught: The bowl should be made smaller, and the bowl should be placed. In summer, the bowl should be placed nearby. The so-called "if there is none, one should abandon it" refers to the situation where there is no bowl. It is shown here that if there is no bowl, one should abandon it. One should not fully approach. The so-called "one should not stand and take out, put in, and dry the bowl" means that one should not stand and take out the bowl from the bowl's container, nor should one put it in, nor should one stand and dry the bowl, this is to avoid the bowl from falling. The so-called "should be used appropriately," the so-called "appropriate" means that the bowl should be used appropriately. To show appropriate use, it is said that "one should not pour in what others have discarded," referring to containers and so on.

Do not pour discarded sewage into the alms bowl. The so-called "do not wipe with it" means do not wipe with the alms bowl. The so-called "do not discard filth either" refers to connecting it with the alms bowl not discarding. The remnants of eaten fruit peels, etc., are called filth. The so-called "do not pour water from hands and mouth" means do not pour water for washing hands and rinsing mouth into the alms bowl, all of which is to avoid disrespectful behavior. The so-called "do not let a novice monk with undisciplined habits clean" means whoever has undisciplined habits is an undisciplined person, do not let such a novice monk clean the alms bowl. This is to avoid dirt, etc. The so-called "do not use sand and dung" means what is mixed with sand is sand. Dung refers to cow dung, do not use it to clean the alms bowl. This is to avoid faults such as rotting. The so-called "do not put it back when it is too wet" means do not hide the alms bowl back in the container, etc., when there are still water stains, this is to avoid the fault of rusting. The so-called "do not make it too dry" means do not let the alms bowl become too dry, this is to avoid the fault of roughness. The so-called "do not put it on a stone" means do not put it even for a moment. The so-called "do not put it in an unclean place" is because the alms bowl is very good. The so-called "it is not okay to put it anywhere" refers to connecting it with "place" and "not putting". In this way, the meaning of the words here appears as follows: wherever there is no paved courtyard, etc., do not put the alms bowl there, not even for a moment. The so-called "do not put it there" means do not put the alms bowl anywhere. This is a negation of placing it permanently, not just negating it for a moment. In order to indicate the place where the alms bowl can be placed at all times, it is said, "for this, make a groove," the so-called "for this" means for placing the alms bowl, make a groove. The shape of the groove is like the eye of a cow.
