It is a pool, bathe there. In order to prevent it from becoming dirty by being held by everyone while bathing, it is said that this should be held by the patient. That iron long basin should only be held by the patient, not by others. Putting a lid on it means putting a lid on that iron long basin, in order to keep the hot water for a longer time. That putting a pillow with gaps on the neck means putting a pillow with gaps in the direction of the neck on the iron long basin, so that the neck will not hurt by maintaining the posture for a long time. After bathing, the feet should be washed, so it is said not to wash the feet arbitrarily. Do not wash your feet arbitrarily in the corridor, etc., this refers to the regulations of the temple. Then where to wash? Therefore, it is said that the place is Waka, and it should be known that the convenient place to wash feet is Waka. Here the scripture is what the World Honored One said, wash your feet in Waka. Regarding "making the base for foot washing", putting the word "make" in the first place of the verb is to show that it is an arbitrary behavior. The base for foot washing refers to the place for washing feet. This is common to everyone, because it is the ritual behavior of the Sangha. In which direction? Therefore, it is said that it is in the southeast corner above the temple. The top of the temple refers to the roof. Relying on the door of the temple, it is set up in the corner between the east and the south, that is the meaning. What kind of shape? Therefore, it is said that the shape is rough like a turtle. What shape is like the back of a turtle, that is like the shape of a turtle. Rough means rough appearance, set it up like that. In order to be comfortable to touch, a foot washing basin made of clay or metal should be placed. The foot washing basin refers to the vessel for washing hands and feet.

Then, what should it be made of? Therefore, it is said, "Made of earth," which means that (earthenware) should be placed. Here it says that bowls made of gold, silver, lapis lazuli, and glass should not be placed, but earthenware bowls should be placed. Some extensive commentators say this: Since it is said a second time, "Made of earth," it is understood that those made of copper, etc., are also prohibited. If that were the case, then wood, etc., should also be prohibited. Saying "Made of earth" a second time does not make it so, because it is a kind of special designation, "Only made of earth." Gold, etc., have already been determined to be prohibited. Therefore, the words that mainly prohibit gold, etc., indicate that those made of copper, etc., are to be done. What is the shape? Therefore, it is said, "The base is like an elephant's hoof, with a core." Which bowl has a base like an elephant's hoof, that is, the base is like an elephant's hoof. It should be made that way so that it can be placed stably without tipping over. The base refers to the bottom. Having a core means that which bowl has a core, that is, having a core, it should be made to have that shape. Having said "with a core," because it is not known on which side it has a core, therefore it is said, "In the middle, like a Kadamba flower, rough." This means that it should be made to have a core on the middle side. What is the shape? Therefore, it is said, "Like a Kadamba flower," etc. Like the flower of the Kadamba tree, the shape is layered, and the rough, bumpy bowl should be held. How should it be placed? Therefore, it is said, "Wash it and place it upside down." The bowl should be placed upside down. How to do it? After washing, wash with other water, not with the water used to wash the feet. Here it says that after washing both feet, the water used to wash the feet should be poured outside the temple or into a ditch.

Again, after having it wiped clean, he said, "Wipe." Where should it be placed? Therefore, it is said, "For the Sangha, on the roof," meaning the Sangha's alms bowl should be placed on top of the roof of the house. "For an individual, in the dwelling, beside the door leaf," meaning beside the door leaf in the dwelling. The individual's alms bowl should be placed between the door leaf and the wall. "In whatever direction of the monastery, where washing the alms bowl and so forth has been done, it should be sprinkled with water," meaning in whatever direction of the monastery where washing the alms bowl and so forth is done, that direction should be sprinkled with water. The word "and so forth" includes activities such as painting, and that area should be sprinkled with water. Furthermore, regarding "anointing," how should the anointing be done? Therefore, it is said, "Like the shape of a topknot or like the shape of a clay drum," meaning it should be anointed in such a shape. If anointing is indicated, with what should it be anointed? Therefore, it is said, "With brick dust or clay." Is it always necessarily like that in all cases? Therefore, it is said, "For anointing for the sake of the deities, there is no fixed shape," meaning for the anointing that is done for the sake of the deities, there is no fixed shape. Anointing for the sake of the deities is for the sake of the deities. Its substance is indeed for the sake of the deities, and for anointing for the sake of the deities, there is no fixed shape. In the context of the basis of ordination, it is said, "Without an alms bowl, one should not ordain or confer full ordination," meaning without an alms bowl, the preceptor and teacher of a novice monk, as well as the monks requesting ordination, should not be ordained. Therefore, in order to include the preceptor and so forth, it is expressed in plural terms. "One should not confer full ordination" refers to the monks who are becoming part of the Sangha. "One should not make it small, large, or covered" refers to the alms bowl being small, large, or covered, and one should not ordain or confer full ordination. Having said "One should not make it small or large" and so forth, therefore, the alms bowl
