Eighth, to what extent is the alms bowl clean? Therefore, it is said that the alms bowl is cleaned two or three times with a sincere heart, and it is clean even if the sound is not pleasant. The alms bowl should be respectfully cleaned with a sincere heart, repeated two or three times, and even if the sound is not pleasant and there is no crisp sound, it is still clean. Here is a story, a bhikkhu washed the alms bowl and made a sound with his fingers, but the sound was not pleasant, and he felt regret. The Blessed One taught: Wash it two or three times with a sincere heart, and even if the sound is not pleasant, you can only enjoy it, and don't regret it for this. There is no fault in the paint peeling off, which means that the color stains appear on the cleaned alms bowl, which is called paint peeling off, and there is no fault in this. It is also okay to touch without contamination, which means that if the alms bowl touches something edible, if it is not contaminated, there is no fault in it. It is also okay to wash it three times with any of alkali, heavy objects, or soil, even if it is greasy, which means that it is okay to wash the alms bowl three times with any of alkali, heavy objects, or soil, even if it is greasy. Here is a story, please ask, can a bhikkhu use alkali, heavy objects, or clay to wash the alms bowl three times, and if it is still greasy, can it be enjoyed? The attendant replied: Yes, you can. why? Because that is for ease of use, not disallowed. Mentioning alkali here is just an example, other things are also possible, it should be understood. The floating matter should be removed, which means that if the alms bowl is cleaned in this way, if it comes into contact with grease or paint, etc., and floating matter is produced, it should be removed. Here is a story, a bhikkhu had a cracked alms bowl, and he used it to receive alms, and as a result, grease appeared, and fatty fish-eye-like substances formed on it, and the bhikkhu felt regret. The Blessed One taught: Remove the grease on top and you can drink it.

So it is. The statement "The defiled part should be washed only partially" means: If any part of the alms bowl is defiled by food, etc., then only the defiled part of the alms bowl should be washed; it is not necessary to wash the whole thing. Here, the scripture records that a monk was washing with a handled alms bowl, and seeing many grains of rice on the handle, he felt regret. The Blessed One instructed, "Scrape it off with a piece of wood, rinse it two or three times with water, and then enjoy it; do not regret this." The statement "To remove the oil from oily things like pots, they should be placed in a deep pool of water" means: To remove the oil from oily things like pots, they should be suspended in a deep pool of water. How long should they be placed? Therefore, it is said, "Place them until the fish, turtles, frogs, or baby crocodiles have eaten them all, or until the fish eggs are finished." This means that they should be placed until the fish, etc., have eaten all the oil. The statement "Burning can also remove the oil" means: Oily things like pots can also be burned in a fire to remove the oil. So, how should pots, etc., that have had their oil removed by being completely eaten or burned, be made clean and pure? Therefore, it is said, "Having become free of oil, it is by washing." This means that pots, etc., having become free of oil, become clean and pure by washing. What should they be washed with? Therefore, it is said, "It is cleaned by clay or heavy objects." This means that pots, etc., having become free of oil, become clean by washing with clay, etc. The statement "Salt, etc., becoming salt water, altered water, and turbid water, is only half" means: From salt, altered substances, and turbid substances, if salt becomes salt water, altered substances become altered water, and turbid substances become turbid water, if stored or drunk without permission

It is "half" itself, which is the term for "wrongdoing." The so-called "for all beings, even at inappropriate times is permissible," means that when salt and other things become salt water and other things, it is permissible to receive them at inappropriate times for all beings, both sick and not sick, even if they have not been filtered, and there is no fault. The so-called "for salt and altered substances that do not function, there is nothing," means that for the two that do not function as salt and do not function as altered substances, there is not even "half" itself, so there is no offense of wrongdoing for them. Here, in the first three sutras, salt and altered substances are mentioned, and it should be known that they are co-arisen. It is not a proximate cause. There are two kinds of proximate causes, namely, from the source and from the addition. Among them, from the source, the following will specifically explain that "those that are added from the source and are not obvious are not counted as existing." From the aspect of addition, even if it is not obvious, it should be known that it is the agent that completes the offense. For those that are not co-arisen, there are also cases where they become co-arisen due to different circumstances. For example, if salt or an altered substance is added to water, and it stays for a while until it dissolves, then when the salt and other things do not function, even if it is not co-arisen, it should be known to be similar to co-arisen. Here, the teaching of "half" is, if a monk temporarily turns the Sangha's drinking water into salty water, stores it, and then drinks it, what offense is committed? Answer: Wrongdoing. If a monk temporarily turns the Sangha's drinking water into salty water and drinks it without receiving it, what offense is committed? Answer: Wrongdoing. If a monk temporarily turns the Sangha's drinking water into a substance that causes alteration and drinks it without receiving it, what offense is committed? Answer: Wrongdoing. If a monk temporarily drinks the turbid Sangha drinking water without receiving it, what offense is committed? Answer: Wrongdoing. That is what is said. Finally, it says, "If an image appears." The so-called "finally,"
