I have heard it said, and the attendant also thinks so, and we also think the same, it is said. The so-called "another dwelling is not another's dwelling" means that if the owner is of a different caste and becomes another's dwelling, then the original owner is not another's dwelling. For example, if a householder dwells in a bhikkhu's dwelling or a sangha's dwelling, even if the bhikkhus dwell there, it is not a bhikkhu's dwelling. Here the scripture says that if a venerable one dwells with bhikkhus and also with householders, then is it permissible or not permissible to take a meal there and to expel someone there? The attendant should eat. It is said. If a place has been emptied, if a bhikkhu dwells there temporarily, that is also a bhikkhu's dwelling. If the possessions of a householder are not displayed, then it is not emptied. The personal dwelling of the novices and the dwelling commonly owned by the novice sangha are not the dwelling of a bhikkhu. In a bhikkhu's dwelling or a bhikkhu sangha's dwelling, even if only novices dwell there, it is permissible, but that is a bhikkhu's dwelling, because the novices are the retinue of the bhikkhus. Regarding "taking in hand, cooking inside, those cooked by a bhikkhu, those are prohibited because of time, holding until the time of survival, those are not un-stored," this sutra is spoken for medicine. The so-called "taking in hand, cooking inside, those cooked by a bhikkhu, those are prohibited because of time" means that taking in hand and so on, in some times when famine and so on occur, it is permitted to eat, but in some times when famine and so on do not occur, it is prohibited to eat those. There, the so-called "holding until the time of survival, those are not un-stored" means that holding until the time of survival, those are for eating, there is no difference in time, that is the common meaning here. The so-called "because of time" means that the time before noon and the time after noon until sunset, in these two times, if taking in hand and so on, when famine and so on occur, that time

One should eat the food etc. that is taken temporarily, not at other times. Medicines etc. that are taken in the morning should be eaten that very morning; one should not eat after noon. Similarly, food etc. that is taken in the afternoon should be eaten until the end of the allotted time in times of famine etc.; one should not eat after the allotted time has passed. For those blessed objects kept for sustenance, there is no such rule, because they have no time limit, so they can be eaten at any time. Those unblessed objects kept for sustenance are kept for the sake of time. The saying, "Contamination is half the food," means that whatever is contaminated by food etc. in the bowl etc. is only half the food, not the whole food, because the bowl etc. is not food. Here the scripture says that if a monk's bowl, small bowl, tilted vessel, salt bag, bowl container, clothes, man shel (Tibetan transliteration, a kind of container), bed, small bed, mat, vase, pills, key, crooked key are contaminated by storing these things, eating all of them will result in a transgression. Here, "eating that" means that eating those things contaminated by food is the meaning of the word "eating that." The saying, "Eating and drinking with an unclean mouth is also the same," means that eating or drinking with an unclean mouth is also only half the food. There is no fault in eating and drinking after washing the mouth. Here the scripture says that if a monk drinks water without washing his mouth, he commits a transgression. Here it is taught that if one eats or drinks with an unclean mouth, it is only half the food and one commits a transgression. How much is considered a clean mouth? Therefore it is said: The outside of the mouth should be wiped with the tongue or soil, and then rinsed with water to be clean. That is, the outside of the mouth, the two lips, should be wiped with the tongue or soil, and then rinsed with water to be clean. The inside should be rinsed with one or three mouthfuls of water. That is, the inside of the mouth should be rinsed with one or three mouthfuls of water and then spat out to be clean. Twenty-first fascicle.
