It was said, "Do not eat in other houses." Some monks became ill, and those serving the sick came late, licking the dust off the food. When their affairs were completely delayed, those monks reported to the Blessed One. The Blessed One instructed, "Therefore, it is permitted for five kinds of people to receive alms and then eat." Who are the five? Those who come suddenly, those preparing to leave, the sick, those serving the sick, and those who have been appointed. This is what was said. Therefore, whether or not someone is invited, in the assembly of monks, before all the assembled monks have begun to eat, one should not receive and eat from one's own portion of food, the kitchen, or the communal food. If two or three monks are invited, one should also not receive and eat from the kitchen and communal food. Even if there is only one monk residing in a monastery, one must not eat food in a place other than the designated area; if one eats, one will commit a serious offense. If a single monk is invited, he also should not receive and eat from the kitchen or communal food unless designated by the patron. All monks or nuns who practice the same Brahma, should not accept individual food until everyone has eaten. If a situation arises where one cannot go to the invitation, one should not accept substitute food unless given by the patron. In this way, monks and nuns can eat together in the same designated place. The Blessed One also permitted this, saying that for the sake of monks who might come, a seat should be placed at the front of the line, and then the nuns should be assigned positions. The explanation of 'the downfall of eating in assembly' is finished. Now, intending to speak about the downfall of eating at the wrong time, it is said that the time from one's own afternoon until the appearance of dawn is considered the wrong time. Considering from where the monks reside, such as in Jambudvipa, the term 'one's own' here should be understood in this way. Therefore, the time from one's own afternoon until the appearance of dawn the next day is the wrong time, that is, the time after the midday meal.

The time from the moment onwards until the dawn breaks is to be known as the improper time. Here, the scripture asks whether a monk who engages in activities or consumes food at the improper time incurs a transgression. The answer is yes. However, it is said that if one considers the time in Jambudvipa (the continent where we live), eating in the other three continents does not incur a transgression. Such things are said. "Knowing as primary" refers to the very act of recognizing the improper time as the most important thing. What if it is universally practiced? Therefore, it is said, "If one engages in activities or consumes food." That is, if one engages in activities or consumes food at the improper time, it will result in a transgression. The transgression of eating at the improper time has been explained. Next, intending to speak about the transgression of hoarding, first, the definition of hoarding should be explained. Therefore, it is said, "If one receives food in the morning and keeps it for the afternoon, or if it exceeds the proper time, it is like hoarding." That is, the time for morning food, activities, and consumable food is from the break of dawn until the moment of noon. If one receives morning food during this time, and that act of receiving does not cease, and it extends beyond noon into the time for afternoon food, it is hoarding. If the act of receiving ceases, it does not constitute hoarding. "That" refers to the afternoon food, which is food suitable for that time. If one receives it, and the act of receiving does not cease, and it extends beyond the proper time, it is hoarding. If the act of receiving ceases, it does not constitute hoarding. The "proper time" mentioned in the scriptures should be understood as this proper time. "Knowing as primary" is connected to "If one engages in activities or consumes food." "In that very thing" refers to the very act of hoarding. "Knowing as primary" here is also connected with the name "knowing as primary" and the name "considering recognition as most important." Activities and consumable food are also hoarding, and a monk should understand it in this way.
