The half of transgression is the term called 'dukṛta' (an offense of wrong-doing). If monks who are not residing in the place where they should come, eat food without asking whether they have come, then it is only a downfall, because the sutra says 'residing,' so if this exclusion of those who are not residing is not done, then it will be a downfall. Here, the rule is that there are houses near the base residence, and if monks eat food at the base residence, then they should ask whether the monks have come from the house residence. If they eat without asking, then those at the base residence will commit an offense of wrong-doing, and those at the house residence will commit a downfall. If monks eat food at the house residence, then they should ask whether the monks have come from the base residence. If they eat without asking, then those at the house residence will commit an offense of wrong-doing, and those at the base residence will commit a downfall, as it is said. This is what is taught: Within one boundary, the base residence is in a separate place, and outside that base residence there are houses, and sometimes the distribution of food is done at the base residence, and sometimes it is done in the houses. So, if the distribution of food is done at the base residence, then the monks living in the houses will also come there for food. At that time, the monks residing at the base residence should ask whether the monks residing in the houses have come. If they eat without asking, it is an offense of wrong-doing. The monks residing in the houses who have not arrived there should also ask whether the monks residing at the base residence have come. If they eat without asking, they will commit a downfall. Therefore, if the distribution of food is done in the houses, then the monks residing at the base residence will also come there for food, and at that time, the monks residing in the houses should ask whether the monks residing at the base residence have come. If they eat without asking, it is an offense of wrong-doing. The monks residing at the base residence who have not arrived there should also ask whether the monks residing in the houses have come. If they eat without asking, they will commit a downfall. Here, not asking is only an example of not eating food together, but the cause of the downfall is not eating food together itself.

Yes. Therefore, if the food is shared, there is no fault even if it is eaten without asking. In this way, for the determined monks, even for the sake of a single day, it is blameworthy in the assembly of the Sangha. For the undetermined monks, it will constitute a complete offense. Now, the basis of the matter that has arisen is to be stated. If a place is fixed, and in that place some monks are eating food separately, and if they also gather and eat together, or if it is clearly known, or if there are doubts, then all the monks belonging to the Sangha will only incur a minor offense, because they are indifferent to gathering and eating together. If even a little of anything is distributed, it is still the same food. That is to say, whether the Sangha distributes any small amount of food to those who eat in a separate place, or those who eat in a separate place distribute it to the Sangha, at that time the food is the same and not different, and it will not become a downfall of gathering and eating together. All those other than those who are about to depart, those who come suddenly, the sick, those who care for the sick, and the stewards, should not take food from the kitchen and the common heap and eat it before all have eaten. That is to say, other than the five people such as those who are about to depart, others should not take their share from the kitchen and the common heap and eat it until all the monks have eaten. Other than means other than the five people such as those who are about to depart. Before all have eaten means until all the monks belonging there have not eaten. Kitchen means the place where food is prepared, such as the warehouse. Common heap means the place in the center of the Sangha, such as rice. Likewise, here in the text, from the basis of medicine: 'These five sons of Maudgala are alms that arise from busyness, what five? Namely, those who come suddenly, those who are about to depart, the sick, those who care for the sick, and the food of the stewards.' In the Miscellaneous Matters, the Blessed One also said to the busy monks
