If it is necessary to do so, it should be done. By leaving a remainder, one prays to someone, saying, "Please grant it to me." Doing so is the very act of leaving a remainder. If one does it by leaving a remainder, how should one perform the act of leaving a remainder? Therefore, it should be done by the words, "Please partake." That is to say, one should utter the words, "Please partake." Some say, "Please enjoy as you wish." Some teachers say that one should utter the words, "Please enjoy as you wish." Here, the meaning is the most important, and the words are not necessarily fixed. Therefore, the words for the act of leaving a remainder can be these two mentioned in the sutras, or others similar to them. Is the act of leaving a remainder completed merely through words? Therefore, one should say, "I have eaten two or three mouthfuls." That is to say, first eat two or three mouthfuls, making it a remainder, and then discard it by uttering the words previously spoken. By doing just that, it is both a remainder and a discarding, so it is called leaving a remainder. If one makes a remainder by observing that someone does not eat, should one also eat two or three mouthfuls? Therefore, one should say, "By abandoning the act, one should not eat." That is to say, someone who abandons the act of eating food, that is abandoning the act. Therefore, one should not eat, but should make a remainder by any words such as "Please partake." The remainder should be given to others to eat. That is to say, the remaining food that one bhikshu has received, other bhikshus can also eat. Here, the text says that whatever is permissible for one bhikshu is also permissible for others. The so-called "knowing as primary," here too, should be combined with the name "knowing as primary" and the name "one who makes recognition primary." For what is recognition made primary? Therefore, one should say, "For the very act of abandoning and the very act of not making a remainder." That is to say, for the very act of abandoning by oneself, and for the food that should be eaten, if others have not made a remainder, if the bhikshu also knows this, then for that object, his recognition is the very one who makes recognition primary.

If one knows that one has abandoned and that what is to be eaten is not left over, that is the meaning. If one asks, how should one act to be the one who does this? Therefore, it is said, "Having eaten," that is, having swallowed it into the throat. If one asks, what is eaten? Therefore, it is said, "Only food," that is, the meaning of only what should be prepared. Saying "only food" does not liberate from meat, mouth, sores, etc., just as eating at the wrong time in a general and specific way. Here, because a single seat meal is prescribed from the beginning, it should be known that all these are determined in this way. If a monk correctly obtains the merit of practicing "one seat meal," whether he has abandoned it or not, as long as he has eaten, whether there is leftover or not, the food that should be prepared and the food that can be eaten should not be eaten again. If he eats, the vow will be broken. It should be known that the fault of making a vow is the difference between ordinary monks and those with the merit of practice. The transgression of "one seat meal" has been explained. Wanting to speak about the transgression of giving after abandoning, therefore it is said, "Giving." Here too, know that the most important thing is abandoning and not leaving anything over. Accept the parts mentioned earlier and then say this: For food that has been eaten and abandoned, if it is only given, this transgression will occur. If one asks, to whom is it given? Therefore, it is said, "Giving to a monk," that is, if one gives permissible items to a monk. If one gives impermissible items to a monk, then all of these will constitute a misdeed. The transgression of giving after abandoning has been explained. Wanting to speak about the transgression of gathering and eating, therefore it is said, "Knowing the most important." Here too, the name "knowing the most important" should be linked to the name "one who mainly gathers and recognizes." If one asks, for whom is one who mainly gathers and recognizes? Therefore, for those monks who are not in separately determined food places, they form a sangha and live within the boundary.
