Therefore, entrusting it to the householder, the monks should go to the monastery, that is its meaning. Here, the text says that after the monks have eaten, they take the cushions from under their armpits, and when walking, they ask the Brahmins and householders: 'Is there any noble musical instrument to be played?' The Blessed One therefore instructed: 'Do not carry the cushions yourselves, they should be carried by laypeople and novices.' If there are no laypeople or novices, entrust it to that householder to carry it. 'If they say: 'We will carry it.' then put down the cushions and go.' It means that if the householders say: 'We will carry it.' the monks should put down the cushions and go. If they do not carry it, then those in charge should take it.' It means that even if those householders promise to carry it, but do not carry it, then the attendants in charge should take those cushions. Thus it is taught: 'If the householder does not carry those cushions, then those in charge should take them.' If there is no one in charge, then take it yourselves.' It means that if there is not even anyone in charge, then you should take it yourselves, those elders and monks should take it themselves. 'That is its meaning. 'If everyone is needed, then strike the ghanta.' It means that if all the monks need to go and take it, then in order for everyone to gather together to take it, the ghanta should be struck. Thus it is taught: 'If all the monks need to take those cushions without exception, then in order for everyone to go and take the cushions, the ghanta should be struck.' If the patron borrows cushions in the monastery for their own purpose, they should be given.' It means that if the patrons come to the monastery, and in the monastery, the patrons borrow the Sangha's seating for their own purpose, the Sangha should lend it to them. That is its meaning. 'In order to protect those seats, a monk should also be assigned.' It means that in order to protect those seats lent to the patrons in the monastery, the monks should assign a monk.

The term "should do" means: The monk who is assigned to guard should not join the householder's eating, drinking, and conversations, but should sit quietly to one side, slightly apart. The term "should do one's own work" means: That monk should also do his own work, such as meditation, recitation, and reading. The term "also pay attention" means: When the monk is alone, he should pay attention to those cushions and be vigilant. The term "should be collected during meals" means: Those cushions should be collected when the householder is eating. The term "impure things should be cleaned" means: The cushions that have been soiled by laypeople should be cleaned by the disciplinarian, etc. The term "if stained with alcohol, wash with water" means: If stained with alcohol residue, it should be washed clean with water. The term "if stained with oil, wipe with clay" means: If stained with oil, it should be wiped clean with clay ash. The term "if stained with impurity, use earth, clay, or dung" means: If the cushions are soiled by impure things, they should be cleaned with earth, clay, or dung. If the fabric becomes unclean and cannot be cleaned with clay, what should be done then? Therefore, it is said, "If the fabric is unclean, it should be cut off," meaning that if the fabric made of thread, etc., is unclean, it should be cut off. Here, the scripture says that if it can be cleaned temporarily, that is best. If it cannot be cleaned, the thread should be cut off and discarded, and then re-sewn with new thread. The term "if the householder's cushion is seen uncollected, it should be collected" means: The so-called "householder's cushion," if the cushion laid out by the householders is seen uncollected, whoever sees it should collect it. This explains that if those cushions on which the householders have sat are not collected, then the monk who sees those cushions should collect them. The term "if the one who sees it is old or sick, then the disciplinarian is responsible" means: If the one who sees the uncollected cushion is old or sick, then the disciplinarian should be responsible for collecting it. The term "should inform him" means: The old or sick person who sees the uncollected cushion should inform the disciplinarian.
