If it is not completely damaged, then five transgressions will be committed, so it is said. With what kind of thought? Therefore it is said, "By desire," that is, by the desire to damage. Is it only oneself? Therefore it is said, "Self or others may do," that is, with one's own hand, or with the hands of others, that is its meaning. In what circumstances will a downfall occur? Therefore it is said, "If it is damaged, then it is the basis," that is, when it is damaged, the fundamental downfall will occur. The action for that is a transgression. If many seeds are damaged by one action, then because of one action, will the downfall also be only one? Or because of the number of things to be damaged, will the downfall also become many? Therefore it is said, "It is the number of things to be damaged," that is, the number of things to be damaged will also determine the number of downfalls, combining to say, however many things are to be damaged, that many downfalls will occur. If it is shown that the downfall is determined by the number of things to be damaged, then is the number determined from leaves, branches, and petals? Therefore it is said, "From the trunk," that is, if the trunk of a tree is cut, even if there are already many branches, small branches, and petals, etc., there will still be only one downfall, because the trunk of the tree is one. Similarly, a branch cut from its own trunk will have many small branches and petals; a small branch cut from its own trunk will have many petals; a petal cut from its own trunk, like the petal of a horse chestnut, will have many petals; like the leaf of a castor bean, even if there are many branches, there will still be only one downfall. The trunk should be understood as an example of the lower part. Therefore, cutting the branch of a petal, and cutting the top of a sprout, will also cause a downfall. Slightly piling up from the surface of the trunk, and slightly piling up from the layer of petals, is a transgression of the action. Here the text is, Bhikshu

If a bhikshu fells a tree with one effort, he commits one misdeed and one downfall. If a bhikshu fells a tree with two efforts, he commits two misdeeds and one downfall. Thus, and so on, has been spoken. For the sake of growth, the sutra should be explained in detail, and for the sake of the seed, the sutra itself should be explained in detail, that is, regarding the number of things to be destroyed. Regarding this, there are five kinds of seeds, namely: the seed of the root, the seed of the trunk, the seed of the internode, the seed of the broken, and the seed of the seed. Among these, for all five seeds, such as the seed of the root, all the forms that exist should be understood as an explanation of the trunk itself here. Therefore, for one form that has become a seed, as many trunks as there are, become the object of that many downfalls. Therefore, whatever pods are called "containers," in which there are as many grains of sesame, beans, etc.; and whatever internodes of branches, in which there are as many grains of fennel, mustard, etc., these are different forms because of the grains, but they are not the same form because of the pods, nor are they the same form because of the internodes. Therefore, as many grains as exist in the pods and internodes will not become one by the word "trunk." For example, as many substances of grains as there are in that pod, and as many substances of grains as there are in the internode and ear, become the downfall of that many objects. For effort, for one form of grain, as many efforts as are made, become that many misdeeds. The so-called "for effort, there are many misdeeds" means that for one seed and substance of growth, as many efforts as are made, become that many misdeeds. To this, some say, "Each strike is different, but not from the thing itself." The so-called "to this" refers to this which is involved in the very act of striking. The so-called "each strike is different" means that for the sake of destroying and using seeds and growths, each strike with a pestle, axe, etc., should be known as a different misdeed called "effort."
