That which is called "to" is the field of merit, namely stupas and the Sangha. To perform generosity and eliminate stinginess in this regard, one should express praise for generosity and praise for non-stinginess. Thus it is taught: one should express praise for generosity towards the field of merit which is the nature of the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, and one should also express praise for non-stinginess. "If one does not give up, one should not cut down" means that even if one does so, if one does not give up the transformations such as the arising of fire, then that tree should not be cut down; the tree should not be cut down, this is the final word. That which is called "knowing as the main thing" is that here too, one should combine the name "knowing as the main thing" and the name "one who makes awareness the main thing." If one asks, "In whom is the one who makes awareness?" Therefore, it is said, "In the very undiminishedness," meaning, "If one fully knows the object of the very undiminishedness." If one asks, "By what is the undiminishedness?" Therefore, it is said, "By those who have not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge," meaning, "By whatever, such as fire, has not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge, that is what has not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge." Those who have not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge are those who have not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge, that is those. Thus it is taught: "If one knows the undiminishedness of those who have not allowed seeds and sprouts to emerge." Mentioning the emergence of sprouts refers to the growth of grass and so forth. Mentioning "not allowed to emerge" shows that there is no downfall for diminishing those undiminished seeds that have not been allowed to emerge. If one asks, "If one follows what, then is one who makes awareness the main thing?" Therefore, it is said, "Even if one diminishes even the root system," meaning, "In order to make it manifestly pervasive here, the word 'even' is spoken." The root system refers to the fine network connected to the root. Even if one diminishes even that. Thus it is taught: "Not only does one diminish the actual seeds and sprouts, but even if one diminishes even their root system." Here, the Vinaya states that if one plucks the root system of a tree, one commits a wrong action.

Thus it is said. If asked, how to damage it? Therefore it is said, it can be done in any way. By any means. To indicate that very point, it is also said that shaking also works. Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk shakes and picks fruits from a tree, what offense is committed? If those are ripe fruits, then it is a misdeed. If they are not ripe, then it is a downfall. Thus it is said. Also by pressing down with grass, mud, soil, etc. If it causes damage, then it is a downfall. It should be connected to this. Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk oppresses a tree with grass or mud or soil, let it be damaged, let it be completely damaged, what offense is committed by oppressing in this way? It is a misdeed. If a monk covers it with green grass, dust, sand, or anything else, what offense is committed? It is a misdeed. Thus it is said. Here, it is said to be a misdeed merely considering the action itself, but if it causes damage, then it will only be a downfall. Here, the mud that is said should be understood as clay. Also with hot juice, etc. Hot juice means pouring hot meat juice, etc. The sound of 'etc.' includes digging, attracting branches, and also round objects and seedlings. Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk pours hot meat juice in the direction of green, etc. Also by placing it in the wind and sun, if it damages the seeds, then it will become a downfall. If not, then merely the action itself is a misdeed. Here, in the distinction of nuns in the Vinaya text, it says, if a nun places these five types of seeds in the wind and sun in order to damage them, if the seeds are completely damaged, then it is a downfall. If they are not completely damaged, then it is a misdeed. Thus it is said. Also on dry land. It should be connected to 'also by placing'. Here, the Vinaya text says, if a monk places these five types of seeds on dry land in order to damage them, if the seeds are completely damaged, then five downfalls are committed.
