In the midst of the Sangha, to show what the Blessed One has said is not to be done as something to be done, and to show what is to be done as something not to be done, then at that time, that person will fall into a transgression called a 'gross offense.' Wishing to state the definition of lying that becomes a transgression, during the Sojong, if one is asked three times, 'Are you completely pure?' and knowing that one is not pure, remains silent and lets it pass, then it is said to be a transgression. 'During the Sojong' means in the midst of the Sangha performing the Sojong. 'Are you' means a complete question. 'Here' means in the Sojong. 'You' means all of you. 'Are you completely pure?' means have you not committed any transgressions? 'Are' refers to the general question. 'Asked three times' means that one must be asked only three times, until the third question is completed. This shows that when the Sangha gathers for the Sojong, the Sutra of Individual Liberation is recited, and the Sangha is asked only three times, 'Are you completely pure?' The meaning of this is, are all those gathered here those who have not concealed any transgressions through confession and blessing? When the Sutra of Individual Liberation is recited and asked in this way, if someone knows that they are not pure, but remains silent, pretending to be completely pure, and lets the time of the third question pass, then they will fall into this transgression of a transgression. This is a complete transgression, but not in intention, because there is a verbal expression and so on. Now, wishing to state the definition of lying that becomes a downfall, it is said, 'Other than those two, the defeat and the Sangha residue.' 'Those two' refers to the gross offense and the lying that becomes a transgression just mentioned. 'Other than the defeat and the Sangha residue' means other than the two mentioned earlier, that is, other than those four types of lying, changing the perception is a downfall.

It is called lying, which leads to downfall. Therefore, downfall will occur. It is said that the two lies that have just been spoken, and the two that were spoken before, other than these four types of lies, for the object of understanding the meaning, transforming consciousness into another, thereby establishing this action that leads to downfall. Lying is established by relying on consciousness, not by relying on the thing itself. When one wants to speak, the arising of another consciousness is a lie, there is no doubt about that, but when another consciousness arises at the time of speaking, it will not become a lie, because it is motivated by the initial consciousness. In order to eliminate this doubt, it is said that even if consciousness arises at the time of speaking, it is motivated by it. The time of speaking is the time of speaking, and at the time of speaking, if another consciousness arises for the meaning of what that meaning is, then the lie is motivated by it. It is said that even at the time of speaking, such a consciousness will arise: the meaning of what is being said is other, and I will say it as other, then this must also be a lie. From the word "again", it is shown that there is no need to mention that other consciousness arises only when initially observing separately. Here, the treatise is: What are the two types of lies? Knowingly speaking a lie, thinking I will speak a lie, and then after speaking, thinking I have spoken a lie. Therefore, there is no single type of lie. Some are the actual practice together with the preparation, and some are the actual practice together with the conclusion. There is no lie that is only the conclusion, because the words have already been spoken. Do not swear an oath, this is excerpted from miscellaneous matters. In the beginning of the six groups swearing an oath to the Buddha, the Blessed One said: Therefore, monks should not swear an oath. Like this, from swearing an oath, like this.

It will become a declaration, because I do not enter with truth into all things, but for the one who swears, by the power of the oath I enter with truth, such a declaration will have faults, therefore a Bhikshu should not swear. The downfall called false speech has been explained. Wanting to speak of the downfall of speaking from fault, it is said, "Of a Bhikshu," etc., this Sutra and the Sutra below, whatever is thought to be improper is spoken, should be combined with this. It is shown thus, whatever is thought to be improper is spoken, is the downfall of speaking from fault. It should be known that this is only within the scope of a Bhikshu, if a Bhikshu speaks to a Bhikshu, then this offense is committed, but not to a Shramanera or others, because it is said in the Sutra that it is a misdeed. The phrase "The same is true for the following" means that the following of this training, "Speaking divisive words to a Bhikshu," is also the same, only speaking to a Bhikshu, it is also like this, only within the scope of a Bhikshu will a serious offense be committed, but for a Shramanera or others, it is only a misdeed. Therefore, speaking from fault and the two trainings of speaking divisive words to a Bhikshu, should be known to be only within the scope of a Bhikshu. Without divisive words, etc., only speaking idle words, it is only a misdeed. Because even with a completely pure mind, it is possible to speak improper thoughts, in order to distinguish from this, it is said, "Wanting to speak of the fault itself." It means, with the thought of wanting to speak of this fault itself, speaking from the fault of a Bhikshu, then this offense is committed. With what kind of language? Therefore it is said, "Whether gentle or harsh is acceptable," it means, whether gentle or harsh language, wanting to speak of the fault itself of a Bhikshu, speaking with an improper thought, then this offense is committed. Because speaking harsh words accompanied by speaking from fault, will become the main practice, therefore speaking harsh words is also included in this training itself. It is said, "Whatever is spoken with an improper thought."
